Sticking Points 2048.1: Rockville Bows Out Of Playoffs, Deals For Gerald Sizemore

Post by aaronweiner » Mon Aug 09, 2021 1:32 pm

Last time the Rockville Pikemen lost to the Las Vegas Hustlers in seven games, in 2040, Vegas went on to win the BBA title. In 2047, history repeated itself: Rockville lost a hard-fought seven game series to the Hustlers, and the Hustlers were 2047 Brewster Champs.

"It stings a little less knowing that we lost to the best team in the BBA this season," said manager Denny Dooley. "But you never want to lose in the playoffs, ever."

The Pikemen got the split they needed in Vegas, but could only take two of three at home and couldn't take another one on the road. Game 7 was a close affair, too, as Rockville tried to mount a furious rally in the ninth inning that came up short as Francisco Flores grounded out with the bases loaded and two outs.

"I thought I had a hold of the 1-0 pitch, but their first baseman made a diving stop and ran it over to first base for the game," said Flores. "Damn my stump legs - I wish I ran like Pablo Lara."

Speaking of Lara, the Rockville #1 draft pick had a very nice playoff run, playing ten of the eleven games while hitting .320 and his first playoff home run.

"This year has been like a magical year for me," said Lara. "I don't think I have felt the loss yet, but I am sure I will in a few days when I am at home and waiting for the next year."

Shortly after the Brewster, the Pikemen announced a trade for the 2044 #1 overall pick, Gerald Sizemore. Sizemore suffered through a very tough 2047 campaign, allowing the most home runs in the Johnson League and finishing with a ghastly 3-21 record, also worst in the Johnson League. Rockville gave up five prospects for him, including top pitching prospect Kelyn Lomond and last year's third round pick, Setian Sumual.

"Obviously right now it's all lemons, but dealing for Sizemore shows we're going to try to make lemonade," said Rockville GM Aaron Weiner. "Pushing Vegas to seven games tells us our restructuring is good enough, and we've got a real chance next year."

Betting on talent and a change of scenery, I like the move. Plus he will have low arb numbers too

Worth the gamble considering what you gave up. His numbers thus far are atrocious, though.

He's been totally awful. But he's better than what I have.
