Sticking Points 2047.13: Rockville Wins Geoghegan Round For First Series Win Since 2043

Rockville has been a team of significant streaks during their fourteen-year playoff run. Most consecutive 90-win seasons. Second most consecutive playoff appearances. But they have some older records not often remembered: Rockville also owns a share of the record for most consecutive Cartwright Cups (6), which meant they had to win a playoff series in six consecutive years.

However, it's been a while since that team was rampaging over the Johnson League. Despite making the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, Rockville bowed out in their first playoff matchup and didn't even go the distance in two of them. Consider that a streak broken: the Pikemen took down the Edmonton Jackrabbits in 4 games in the Geoghegan to face the Las Vegas Hustlers in the Doubleday.

"I think what's impressive about this series win is that we're a whole new ballclub, but also not," said right fielder Julio Barajas, who was an 18 year old phenom the year the Pikemen broke the Cartwright record. "We've got so many of the old faces, but a whole new feel."

The Pikemen did bring back important former players like Chip Puckett and Francisco Flores this year, and the Pikemen feel that may have made a difference in the playoffs.

"Neither player is a leader in the clubhouse, but having them there, to tell stories of what it was like at the very beginning, that's a big deal," said manager Denny Dooley. "There's a lot of history and sometimes it's just overwhelming but we keep our heads in the game."

Rockville showed their new-look run prevention crew in the series, and the Jackrabbits were fairly well stymied; the Pikemen gave up just 16 runs in the four games, winning Game 1 by a score of 2-1 and Game 3 by a score of 3-1. But the Pikemen also had some trouble scoring in the series, scoring just 16 runs of their own. It's a concern going into the next series with the top-seeded Las Vegas Hustlers.

"Obviously we're going to need our offense firing on all cylinders," said Dooley. "It's going to be a tough series."

Rockville and Las Vegas last met in the playoffs in 2040, with Vegas winning a tough 4-3 series on their way to their first BBA title in thirteen years and just their second since their uber-run between 2003 and 2008. Vegas also held a 6-2 record this season against Rockville.

"We're the underdogs in this series, sure," said Francisco Flores. "But we've been underdogs before. We can do this."
