Sticking Points 2047.3: Some Of The Fallout From Rockville's Moves

Post by aaronweiner » Sun May 16, 2021 6:59 pm

We've already talked about the new-look lineup from the Pikemen. Let's take a closer look and see how it really looks on paper.

2046: ____________________________________2047:

C Manuel Moreno___________________________Moreno
1B Colin Lee_______________________________Bing-de Zhao
2B Bing-de Zhao____________________________Daniel Pepper
SS Daniel Pepper___________________________Chip Puckett
3B Mike Galloway__________________________Galloway
LF Wilson Alomar___________________________Gilberto Falchonelli
CF Gilberto Falchonelli______________________Luis Jimenez (for now)
RF Julio Barajas____________________________Barajas
DH Matthew Reilly__________________________Reilly

Two notable downgrades offensively: Alomar to Jiminez, and Colin Lee to Puckett. These are significant downgrades for the #1 offense in the Johnson League last year, though there are reports that Lee will get in some reps as the team will experiment with different lineups and give Puckett some rest days.

But what a difference these two moves make in the defense! Every one of those players is an enormous upgrade defensively, and players like Zhao, Puckett, and Jimenez are legitimate Yogi Zimmer contenders. Pepper returns to his natural 2B and Falchonelli should be very good in left field. Reportedly, Rockville is also working on upgrading the center field position, so we will see if that's all there is to it. Moreno is also an extremely poor defensive backstop, but Rockville was willing to accept his shortcomings there.

The core of the offense is still intact, too: Zhao, Pepper, Barajas and Reilly combined last year for 19 WAR last year. Puckett had 3 WAR, and Falchonelli, Galloway, and Moreno could each be counted on 2 WAR for a full season. Put that together and Rockville approaches the league-leading 29.2 WAR they had last year, which, remember, was with one of the league's worst defenses.

"We think that Zhao and Pepper haven't maxed out their potential yet," said Rockville manager Denny Dooley. "These guys are both superstars, but putting them back at their regular positions might send these two into potential Sawyer Silk territory. Zhao's defense at first base is as spicy as crazy feta."

The Pikemen also added a number of prospects in the movement, which was proving to be necessary as some of their draft picks haven't worked out lately. Jeffrey Barry, a 2044 second round pick, retired from baseball after injuries robbed him of much of his effectiveness and drive.

"We couldn't keep running three DHs out there every day and forcing Pepper and Zhao off their marks," said Rockville GM Aaron Weiner. "Obviously, it was working out great in one side of the boxscore, but killing us softly on the other one."
