Sticking Points 2046.11: Rockville in Playoffs, Wins 90 for Thirteenth Straight Year, Faces Charm City

Post by aaronweiner » Mon Apr 26, 2021 2:14 pm

It's possible that the Rockville Pikemen have been so excellent for so long, they're starting to bore their fans, but based on their sold-out stadium we don't think so. The Rockville Pikemen tied the all-time record for most consecutive 90-win seasons this year with their 13th dating back to 2034, and they now trail only the Las Vegas Hustlers 15 straight playoff appearances for most consecutive postseason berths of all time.

Rockville led the league in offense for the third consecutive season, and have not finished below 2nd place offensively since 2042. The Pikemen averaged 5.4 runs per game, over a half run better than second-place Boise and almost 100 runs more. However, they finished nearly dead last in pitching and defense.

"A lot of people like counting us out, but that's when we're at our best," said starting pitcher Danny Leach, winner of the ERA title for 2043-2045, but who struggled as a starter this year. "We've still got a very impressive ballclub."

Rockville has a very tall task in the first round. If you read literally any of their team news this year, you would know that the Charm City Jimmies have the arguably best pitcher in baseball, Bill Constable, who won the JL Triple Crown this year. (Like, literally any of them.) As good as Constable was this year, he found a new level against Rockville, posting an absurd 4-0 record, 0.35 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 26 innings.

"Don't worry, we have a game plan against Constable," said Rockville hitting coach Frank Thomas III. "We're going to swing away and pray that the bat hits the ball. Like, pray hard. Like, we're bringing in a priest to give us a benediction and sprinkle holy water on our bats."

Having to face Constable twice in the first round might be a tall order for Rockville. This matchup might better represent the fall for the Pikemen, who haven't finished third since 2034, the year the streak began, and have won the JL Atlantic just twice in the last five years. But manager Denny Dooley remained positive.

"We can do this," said manager Denny Dooley. "We just have to go up there and focus and do our job, and we can win this series. We've had a habit of winning the close ones this year, and this is just another close one we have to win."

Impressive streak. Nashville has only hit 90 wins once since 2020.

Based on our record head to head, I am rooting for CCJ. Don't take it personally!
