Sticking Points 2046.1: Rockville Knocked Out in Seven, Look to Next Year

Post by aaronweiner » Fri Feb 05, 2021 5:51 pm

The Rockville Pikemen have now won 90 games for twelve consecutive years, tying the record with the great early century Madison teams. With one more, they will have tied their thirteen straight playoff appearances and will trail only the Las Vegas teams of the 20s and 30s. But like both teams, the Pikemen have won just two titles during their long run and fell short again this year, dropping a series in seven games to the Boise Spuds.

"It's obviously disappointing," said Arthur Dempster, who suffered through his worst professional season and got the loss in Game seven after an excellent performance in Game 3. "Boise's a good ballclub and it makes sense that they had a good chance in this series, but it's always painful to be knocked out of the playoffs."

The Pikemen, who had the top offense in the BBA for the second consecutive season, scored five runs in every game and it wasn't enough, highlighting just how tough a season the pitching staff had this year.

"We've been through a lot of upheaval on the pitching side," said Rockville pitching coach and BBA Hall of Famer Billy Chapel, Jr. "Two years our playoff rotation was Dempster, Cannon, and Martin, and a year ago it was Dempster and Martin and Zhang, and now we're throwing rookies in Game 4 and it's just a strange time for us right now.

The Pikemen did win a pennant recently, but fell in seven games to Louisville in 2043, making it nine seasons since they have won a BBA title. With a number of contract extensions signed recently, the Pikemen will be mostly the same team we saw in 2045, which should be a good thing, considering the ballclub won 97 games.

"Well, at least I didn't do any worse than my predecessor," joked new Rockville manager Denny Dooley. "Obviously we would like to win a title sooner than later, but we have a very good team and are primed to win a lot of games next year, too."
