Sticking Points 2043.4: Rockville Storms Into Playoff Position

Post by aaronweiner » Fri Jul 24, 2020 3:17 pm

Rockville had a perfect 6-0 sim for the first time in the 2043 season, and it was a big one for them. For the first time in 2043, the Rockville Pikemen are in a postseason position. If the 2043 season ended today, they would currently have the fourth wild card position. It would be their low point in a decade, but also it's a ticket to the dance.

"We think we can climb even higher than the fourth wild card," said Pikemen superstar Dan Cannon, whose 2.39 ERA this season puts him in fifth place in the Johnson League standings. "We're a really good team again."

The Pikemen currently have the fourth-best run differential in the Johnson League, and are 37-19 since June, the best record in the Johnson League. As a whole, they still seem outclassed by New Orleans this season, but it's not impossible to imagine them winning the division, which would be their eighth in nine years.

"I don't know what's been happening to us in April," said Julio Barajas, who shrugged off a slow start to become the team leader in OPS through August 4th. "We need to figure this out next year for sure."

A few things have led to the Pikemen rising up the standings. Cannon and Arthur Dempster have been on fire, and so has Barajas. Rookies Matthew Reilly and Yun Zhang have been absolutely essential during the run. And the bullpen has been epic this year, led by the unstoppable Danny Leach and a veteran cast.

"It's amazing how this team continually comes up with rookies that rock," said Dempster. "We're not sure how they do it, but we're really grateful that they do."

Rockville is currently 62-48, on a 91-win pace. If they win 90 games, it will be the tenth consecutive year that the Pikemen will have won 90 games or more (all of them playoff seasons).
