Sticking Points 2042.5: What Changes Is 2-43 Likely To Bring?

Post by aaronweiner » Fri May 22, 2020 5:16 pm

Every single year since Rockville started their run, they've added a key rookie, or an important veteran, and often both. This year was no different, as the Pikemen got their first full seasons out of Danny Leach and Daniel Pepper, called up 10-game winner Dwight Dunn, and watched third baseman Sergio Valentin take the starting 3B job, their hope since he was a second round pick in 2039. So what might be different in 2043?

First of all, they may go back to a five man rotation. Calling up Yun Zhang to start the last game of the year for the Pikemen at a point where they'd already won the division wasn't just about resting Arthur Dempster. Having watched Dunn prove himself, the Pikemen might choose to go with Zhang as their fifth starter next year.

"Yun's been in our plans since we drafted him in the first round last year," said GM Aaron Weiner. "We aren't asking a ton from him at first, just to eat innings from the fifth starter spot, but we're hoping that giving him major league experience will help him develop into the solid rotation starter we think he can be."

Zhang's ascendance all but assures that last year's #4/5 starter, 34 year old Rogerio Vazquez, won't be back. That was a long shot anyway after a terrible 2042. There are a few players you might not see back next year as well; Curro Madrid, who was paid $1 million for 3 innings, and Willis Roberts, who in two Rockville seasons has posted a ghastly -2.3 WAR, are two such players. One decision the team has to make is on Joaquin Romano, signed to a four year deal last year, who had the worst full season of his career last year. He'll probably be back, however, as reports are that Rockville wants to give Jason Hone another year of seasoning.

"We've got a few things to do, but we're still the same core as last year," said manager Duane Whitley. "Still the top three starters, still pretty much the same team. We need to play better. But we're going to be very recognizable."

The first question is probably about what Dempster does with is player option.

He's getting re-signed either way unless he expressly wants to leave, which would be weird.

I always get angsty about the short-span in that last negotiation period.

Can we bring back the hyperlink thing somehow? It was so much easier to do.
