Sticking Points 2042.1: Cannon Wins Third Straight Steve Nebraska

Post by aaronweiner » Fri Mar 13, 2020 9:54 am

Dan Cannon has been the best pitcher in the Johnson League by advanced metrics for three straight years, and in three straight years, the voters have rewarded him by giving him the Steve Nebraska Award. Cannon was humbled in his acceptance speech.

"It has been a great honor to be voted as the best pitcher in the Johnson League three years in a row," said Cannon. "I can't take credit for this one alone, as I have truly great teammates that push me to be better every day."

Cannon became the first pitcher in the modern era to win three straight Steve Nebraskas in the Johnson League and just the fourth pitcher in modern BBA history, after three Hall of Famers: Christopher Stoller, Michael Strathallan, and Mike Swanson. He led the JL with 7.7 WAR this season, which was slightly more than last season, and posted a 16-11 record with 223 strikeouts and an ERA 35% above league average.

"Having Dan on the staff makes it so much easier on all of us," said Dave Martin, who won 20 games for the second time in four seasons in 2041. "We are so grateful for his professionalism and his ability to dominate on the mound consistently."

There are questions as to whether the Pikemen can afford Cannon's contract in the future, as the superstar lefty is set to earn $60 million between 2044 and 2045. But given his recent success, it's hard to see how they could afford not to pay the record-setting starter.

"We're obviously committed to Dan for the long term," said GM Aaron Weiner. "We're thrilled he's here in Rockville and we'd love to see him wear our jersey into the Hall of Fame."

The addition of Cannon was pretty clearly a turning point for Rockville franchise. I hope he hangs on to his stuff for a few more years. Would be great to see him as a 250+ win guy.

I gotta believe this is the first time that the top-three finishers in any BBA award were all teammates.

That's an impressive stat.

I'm sure top 2 has happened quite a bit, but not top 3.
