With all of New Orleans' pitching woes, you might have to put an asterisk next to the seventh straight division title for the Rockville Pikemen, but at this point it looks almost like a sure thing. Vegas has stopped taking bets on it. The Playoff Odds put their chances at 98.7%. And their September schedule is the thing dreams are made of. If they blow this one, Aaron Weiner should probably be fired. Or quit.
"I'm not going to quit," said Weiner. "But we'd better not freaking lose."
How good is the Rockville schedule down the stretch? They have a stretch right now of nine games against Charlotte, San Antonio, and Phoenix, three of the five worst teams in the Johnson, and three games against Jacksonville later in the month. After that, they get five games against Boise and New Orleans and then it's all middling non-contenders like Brooklyn, Montreal, and Atlantic City who might be trying out their rookies by then. There's a real chance that Rockville, whose magic number is down to 21, might clinch this thing by the time they play New Orleans on the 19th.
"There are no easy games in the BBA," said Rockville starting pitcher Dan Cannon, whose 6.8 WAR yet again easily leads the Johnson League. "There are only games you win and games you lose. We have to go and win them."
The Pikemen have benefited this year from a few bits of luck. Second baseman Daniel Pepper, called up in June, has basically been the best player in the BBA since arriving. Wilson Alomar has been one of the best rookies in the BBA. And the Pikemen called up surprise prospect Danny Leach this year, who has been basically unhittable as a reliever (and will get a chance as a starter in September).
"We have a great organization that keeps churning out top prospects," said manager Duane Whitley. "It's really not hard to understand why the Pikemen have been as good as they've been for so long."
The Pikemen are currently 83-51, and have won 35 of their last 52 games after a less impressive start. They have a real shot at the #1 seed, especially if they take both games against Boise later in the month, who also have a much tougher schedule down the stretch.
"Having home field in the playoffs would be great," said designated hitter Lorenzo Palacios. "It's always better to play in front of the Rockville fans."
