Sticking Points 2041.3: Rockville Pulls Ahead

Post by aaronweiner » Thu Feb 06, 2020 4:12 am

Here's a stat you might not know: the record for consecutive division titles is 13 straight, by the Madison Wolves and their immortal combination of Cricket Puckett and Bopper Kengos. Second is the New Orleans Crawdads, who dominated the FL Midwest in an ugly way in the tweens and teens for nine straight. Rockville is at six, which is already third all-time; after seven straight wins in the last sim is working hard on their seventh straight division win.

"We're not that interested in records unless they're records for winning championships," said catcher Francisco Flores. "We've got our eyes on the big prize."

Despite what Flores says, winning championships is an awful lot easier if the Pikemen get a first round bye, as they have for all six of their last playoff runs. That helped them to a record-tying six straight Cartwright Cup visits (a streak broken last year by a seven-game Doubleday loss) and two championships.

"A first round bye is such a big deal for us, especially us pitchers," said Dan Cannon, who was voted into his ninth straight All-Star Game this year. "We sometimes feel like our arms are about to come out of their sockets by the end of the year and a little rest is such a big deal for us."

The Pikemen grabbed a commanding 7 1/2 game lead in the division with their perfect sim, and while the season is hardly half over the Statsplus Playoff Odds give Rockville a 96.7% chance to win the division based on the current standings, and a near 100% chance to make the playoffs.

"We're used to being here, so all we have to do is take care of business," said Arthur Dempster, who started the All-Star game in his spare time. "We're rolling again and we know how to stay on a roll long-term. It's another great season in Rockville."
