Sticking Points 2039.7: Rockville's Cap Situation

Even with the Pikemen sneaking in under the cap after arbitration, they're going to be fairly cap-strapped this year as they will have virtually no wiggle room. Reports are that the Pikemen might have to face penalties this year, as they did late last year, for exceeding the cap; right now the Pikemen are at $109.8 million and have just 25 players on the active roster.
"Clearly we've got issues," said Pikemen GM Aaron Weiner. "It's going to be quite a thing to try to manage those sorts of issues, but fortunately we're coming from a position of strength."
Right now Rockville has 14 active position players and 11 active pitchers, enough to field a regular MLB roster but two short of the maximum allowable roster for a BBA team. We'll examine the minor leagues and what they might do about the situation soon, but that's enough to field a team. Worse, there are no obvious cap casualties, as the most expensive players the Pikemen could probably cut is either Larry Blake or Masahiro Ogawa, $1.1 million and $850K.
"Putting together a championship team often means rebuilding the minors as you go," said Weiner. "We are strong in the low minors right now, but we have serious issues with inexpensive talent."
These sorts of cap gyrations will become a bit of a conundrum for the Pikemen as the Pikemen must find a way to re-sign Dan Cannon next year, and figure out what to do with players like Chip Puckett, Lorenzo Palacios, and Manuel Marino that become free agents in 2040. The fact that the Pikemen are weak in the high minors right now complicates things, as it makes it difficult to project what the team will need in subsequent years.
"We have to wait and see what kind of talent our farm produces," said Weiner. "We've recently been independently rated as one of the top five minor league systems in the game, but right now there are only a small handful of players in the minor leagues we could really use in the major leagues at this point."
It will certainly be interesting to see how the Pikemen handle this situation, as Rockville will soon need a steady flow of minimum-salary players to stay stable contenders.
