With two weeks to go in the regular season, Rockville's schedule is one of the lightest in the BBA, their record is one of the heaviest, and their chances of missing the first round of the playoffs for the fourth straight year have grown to a near certainty. With no injuries expected going into the playoffs, Rockville is excited about their chances in the 2038 playoffs.
"We're taking care of business the same way we've done for years," said catcher Francisco Flores, who is expected to get some buzz for the Sawyer Silk Award this year. "This is what we do and we're doing it again."
The Pikemen are likely to get 100 wins for the third time in four years (the other two years: 95 and 99) and appear to be cementing themselves as one of the great dynasties in the history of the BBA. Cynics would also suggest they're on a collision course with Jacksonville in the Cartwright, but the Pikemen refuse to look ahead.
"Right now we match up with either Las Vegas or Phoenix in Round 2, and we only have a winning record against one of those guys," said manager Chet Rouse. "We're not looking ahead past anyone."
The Pikemen also recognize the historical value of what they're about to do. Rockville is going to lose some major free agents this offseason, and they might not be the same caliber of team next year unless they do something dramatic. With that in mind, and with a potential three-peat on the calendar in October,
"We can't keep the band together, so we're doing this in no small part for guys like Mario, Celio, and Fernando," said starting pitcher Bob Coleman. "We don't think this is our last hurrah, but we really want to all go into the record books together."
Rockville is 98-51 with thirteen games to play, and if they keep their foot on the gas pedal - or even if they don't, with an upcoming strength of schedule of .425 - they could tie for the second best record in franchise history or surpass it at 108 wins.
