The Rockville Pikemen were off to a solid start to the season a little while ago. They were in first place despite a .500 record, in a division that some predicted could be won by a .500 record. And, then, like a rocket ship, they blasted off. The Pikemen are an absurd 16-2 in their last eighteen games, including a current eleven game winning streak that has pushed them to a 26-12 start and puts them well on their way to possible BBA glory in October, their possible three-peat.
"We were concerned a little while ago, but not very," said Pikemen manager Chet Rouse. "We knew that we had the horses to contend again despite a sluggish start. This is better obviously."
The Pikemen could be even better than this. Right now the team is 1-8 in one-run games. Put them at 4-5 in those games and they are off to a hilarious 29-9 record, which would be above a 120 win pace. Even with the poor record in close games, the Pikemen are on pace to win 110 games, which would be the highest number by far in their historic four year run, and if you consider their record in games decided by more than one run, the Pikemen are an unbelievable 25-4.
"We're having trouble winning the close ones, but we're winning all the rest of them," said Pikemen shortstop Chip Puckett, off to his regularly scheduled outstanding start. "It's a tough league - just look at the Sun Belt! - but we're doing what it takes to be the best, and that's what we wanted."
The Pikemen know it's a long season, but most prognosticators suggested that their playoff position was clinched the minute they said "Play Ball!" on April 1. Rockville, then, will likely be shooting at a first round bye (their fourth in four seasons) and a 100-win season before letting up, so don't expect the franchise to let up until August at the earliest.
"We're out to prove that we're the best team in BBA history," said designated hitter Manuel Marino. "It would be amazing to be the first team to three-peat and we're trying everything we can every day to make it happen."
Rockville will face Montreal, Phoenix and Jacksonville in their upcoming set to try to extend their 11-game winning streak.
