Sticking Points 2035.13: Gorgeous Georges

Post by aaronweiner » Tue Jul 31, 2018 6:24 pm

If I were to tell you that the ERA leader in the JL resides in Montgomery County, Maryland, you'd probably guess it was Enrique Gomez. Or maybe Arthur Dempster. Or maybe you'd take a random guess and go out on a limb and claim it's Dan Cannon, who must have gone on a nice run since joining the Pikemen. Wrong all three times; the ERA leader in the JL is Andre Georges (12-5, 2.95 ERA), clubhouse leader of the Pikemen.

"It's surprising to me, to be sure," said Georges. "I always knew I had the talent to succeed but it's been a really great year for my teammates and me, too."

In case you think Georges is one of those lucky stiffs who just happened to get great defense, Georges also happens to be leading the league in WAR and r-WAR, and is second to his teammate, Gomez, in FIP. In other words, Georges is getting great D - but is also among the league leaders in efficiency, due to his 101/28 K/BB ratio and the fact that he's allowed just 28 walks in 146 innings, one of the better marks in the league.

"We're very proud of the way that Andre has performed this year," said Pikemen manager Chet Rouse. "He's a phenomenal individual and a great mentor to some of our younger players, and that's just the way we like it. It's nice to see him performing well."

Georges' development is a little bit of a surprise as the righty had been a bit of a disappointment two years ago before performing solidly last year. Nobody saw this much of a jump involved, which is part of why the Pikemen dealt for Cannon midseason. It was even more surprising considering that Georges started the year with a 7.42 April ERA, which gives you an idea of just how good he's been: since the end of April, Georges has allowed just 29 runs in 120 innings, a 2.18 ERA.

"I'm really glad I can be this much of a help to my team," said Georges. "I know that we've got a lot of superstars on this team, and it's nice to be mentioned in the same breath as them."

Hard to believe that a guy with 5/6 movement could be leading the league in ERA.

Or not. :)

If a guy with a 5/6 movement can do it, perhaps it gives me hopes that my stockpile of 3/4 movement guys can do it!

And I'm still hoping Enrique Gomez breaks his arm!

Movement is important, but many folks seem to over-weight it by a wide margin.
