Sticking Points 2034.18: Rockville Arrives Early

Post by aaronweiner » Thu May 17, 2018 11:30 am

The Rockville Pikemen didn't expect to make the final four teams in the BBA this year; they would have been happy making the playoffs again for the first time in half a decade. They would have been happy to have beaten the Las Vegas Hustlers in a tough five game set and build on that for 2035. So to say that the franchise is ecstatic to be in the Cartwright Cup for the first time since the Carolina Kraken won the Landis in 2020 would hardly scratch the surface.

"We're amazed to be here," said Pikemen manager Chet Rouse. "This is an exciting day for Rockville baseball."

Their matchup in the Cartwright Cup has had an even longer drought without a Cartwright appearance. Like Rockville, Havana hasn't been this far in the playoff since 2016 (if you ignore the time/space anomaly of 2017) when they were playing in Buffalo, NY. Unlike the Pikemen, the Sugar Kings' franchise has never won a championship in the modern era.

"Two hungry teams facing off in the playoffs," said second baseman Valeri Kharlamov, who has come up big for the Pikemen in the postseason. "That's why we all watch, isn't it?"

There's no clear favorite in this series. Like the Pikemen, Havana finished around five runs scored per game and gave up four. Havana relies heavily on the dual superstars of Tai hoi Wie and Jared Gillstrom power to fuel their offense, while Rockville brings a more balanced attack. The Pikemen have the better top two starters in Enrique Gomez and Arthur Dempster, but Havana counters with young gun Feliciano Rafael and fireballer Jon Reed.

"It's all going to come down to performances and who comes up big in this one," said Pikemen first baseman Mario Guerrer, who came up big in the Doubleday round, hitting .381 with two homers and two doubles. "It's all about who wants it more."

I wonder if this is the series where the 3 man rotation runs out of gas (especially with gomez low stamina). Should be very evenly matched and I would be surprised to see it go less than 6 either way.

We both got a little lucky - we had four or five days off between series, so the three man should be charged and ready to go.

I don't even know if I should do a three man, but I feel like I'd have to be an idiot to not throw Dempster and Gomez at anyone five times if I can.

I think the way each of our staffs are set up we are running the right way. You have to ride your horses, whereas I have the balance for a 4 man.

True story, I have actually spent all day surrounded by signs directing me to rockville (have been at Walter reed). Not sure if that is a good or bad omen.

I figured you either do or did at one point, because why else move a team there haha. Good thing we don't use real life weather, or this series might have to wait awhile for game 3...
