Sticking Points 2034.13: Rockville Draft A Success

Post by aaronweiner » Wed Mar 28, 2018 5:45 am

The Rockville Pikemen had a very successful draft this year. Their pick at #10, Lorenzo Palacios, is already regarded as one of the top 25 prospects in the BBA, and the draft goes much deeper than just one outfielder. A quick look at the Rockville draft:

Round 1: OF Lorenzo Palacios finished third in the Bo Jordan voting last year and was the most polished product in the draft this year. The lefty outfielder has a major league bat already, and while he has to work on his defense it won't be long until we see his name in the starting lineup in Rockville.

Round 2: The Pikemen liked the idea of drafting a finished outfielder so much they did it again in round 2, selecting Francisco Rocel. Rocel is another lefty outfielder who's not quite as developed as Palacios but was more advanced than most prospects not named Palacios in this draft.

Round 3: SP Ben Pyrmont is the sort of pitcher who could be a rotation starter some day even without a raise in velocity, but a few MPH on his sinker could make a huge difference in his future success. An extremely intelligent and driven young man, Pyrmont has a 2.55 ERA at Rookie League Aurora.

Round 4: IF Jorge Reyes might or might not be a shortstop, but he projects to a solid professional player on the left hand side of the infield. At 17 years old, Reyes has all the defensive tools you'd want for his age, but he needs to refine his bat; scouts think he'll hit enough to play shortstop.

Round 5: 3B/IF Mario Lopez projects as a rock-solid backup infielder in the future, but for now he's just a raw product at Aurora. Good range for a third baseman for 17 years old and a good arm, Lopez might end up backing up all four infield positions.

Round 6: 3B Jose Suarez needs to gain some consistency in the field to be a major leaguer, but he has more talent than your average sixth rounder. Well-developed for his age with a rocket arm at third base, Suarez is just a project right now.

Round 8: SP Shaun Brown was surprised he lasted until the eighth round and so are we, since the righty is one of the more refined arms in the draft. Worse pitchers have had major league innings in this league.

Later rounds: Guillermo Fuentes and Claudio Chacon might have major league bats, but their gloves are weak enough that they'll have to improve a ton to be DHs...Tim Slade needs to improve his bat somewhat too, but if he does a little bit you're probably looking at a future major league fourth outfielder.

Overall, the Pikemen picked up a lot of talent in this draft, and the draft should reap benefits over the next year or two.

Palacios and Rocel fit in so well for Rockville due to them being on a similar timetable to their other prospects. Even if there was more talent available (don't know if there was or wasn't), getting guys who can help soon is so valuable to you right now.

Slade can play all 3 OF spots and can learn 2nd. With a small bump, he's a viable BBA player. That's a nice 11th round pickup.

Is aaron going to do a 'real' draft recap this year?

Started it yesterday. Should finish by the weekend.

Teaching is a lot of work, but at least it takes up all of your time.

That was the whole point of drafting those guys. In a year or so I should get a talent infusion including Palacios, Blake, and Puckett, which should send everything up a level.
