Sticking Points 2034.7: Pikemen Lead Division

Post by aaronweiner » Sat Mar 24, 2018 4:14 am

The Rockville Pikemen expected to contend this year, nabbing the top free agent pitcher on the market to augment one of the most solid youth bases in the BBA. However, a startlingly powerful 6-0 sim has given them a 28-16 record and put them on top of the JL Atlantic Division for the first time in nearly a decade. Rockville outscored their opponents 48-16 in the six game set, scoring eight runs per game and allowing a 2.67 ERA.

"OK, we impressed ourselves a little bit this week," said first baseman Dusty Rhodes, who hit .417 during the sim to bring his average back up to .394 on the season. "We take all of this very seriously but that was quite a week we just had."

What's surprising about the Pikemen so far isn't their pitching, which trails only the wholly remarkable Havana pitching staff in runs allowed per game. Rockville, who plays in a park that depresses home runs more than any other in the league and who stands currently tied for 13th in homers and dead last in walks, is second in the league in runs scored.

"It's not a fluke, since we're third in the league in OPS," said second baseman Valeri Kharlamov, who is finally living up to the huge contract the Pikemen gave him four years ago. "We've got lots of talent on this team all throughout the lineup."

Rockville will face a tough test going into next week, with three games against preseason favorite and current second place Jacksonville before finally returning home for the first three games against longtime rival and very hungry Montreal.

"We're taking both teams very seriously," said starting pitcher Enrique Gomez. "We know that Jacksonville is a very strong team and so are the Blazers, and because the Blazers don't have a lot of wins right now they're going to be pushing very hard against us."

All that matters is still having games to play come October 1st...

Considering how long it's been since I've been legitimately in contention, I'd argue that's not ALL that matters to me.

Fair enough. Winning the division (and a bye) is nice. My goal has always just been to assure at least a wild card spot to at least have a crack at a run. Anything more than that is golden.

Winning the division is fun, it is just a lot less stressful to only worry about being good enough to make the playoffs.
