Wise Kraken 51.2032: What Happens If Jorge Vargas Opts Out?

Post by aaronweiner » Mon Aug 21, 2017 8:16 am

Jorge Vargas has been one of the best two-way players in the game over the past few years, and is the Carolina Kraken's most steady offensive player in 2032. However, this year Vargas could opt out of the last two years of the four-year, $36 million contract extension the former Golden Bat winner signed during the 2030 season in Carolina. Questions are swirling around this possibility, as Vargas, who signed the deal while the Kraken were on their way to a hideous 109-loss season, might not have the patience for another potential 100-loss season.

"It's something that I'll revisit with the team in the offseason, but, of course, that's why I have the option," said Vargas to reporters. "It's possible that we could also negotiate a raise this offseason and that might be a reason to opt out."

It's possible that Vargas deserves a raise. Over the past two seasons, the outfielder has finished with at least a .300 average, 20 homers, and 30 steals. The only other player to do so you might have heard of: Montreal's Jared Gillstrom. Only seven BBA players have accomplished the feat in one of those seasons, and only Las Vegas' Juan Sweetworld can reasonably play center field.

"We don't talk about ongoing contract negotiations, but, obviously, Jorge has been a great player for us," said Kraken GM Aaron Weiner. "It's up to him what he wants to do, but if he's interested in getting a raise that's something we could discuss internally."

It will be interesting to see what the Kraken do if Vargas chooses to opt out. Obviously one option is to re-sign the popular outfielder, but the Kraken might also take the contract savings and invest them elsewhere, as the Kraken payroll could be as low as $44 million next season if Carolina loses the star outfielder to free agency. Carolina is currently on a 103-loss pace and Vargas is in his prime, so he may choose greener pastures over being the focal point of a rebuilding program.

this would probably not be the greatest time for vargas to opt out given the season he has had (which knowing this game, probably guarantees he will).

-.315/.349/.520 line VS RHP
-can play CF or elite level corner.
-has speed
-will be just 29 yr old
-no personality flaws

He is worth every bit of $9 million per year. His only flaw(and reason he is having a down year) is that he can't hit LHP(.159/.193/.243). If I were his agent, I would definitely advise him to opt out.
