2061.21: Bears Offseason Look Ahead - Options & Free Agents

Player Options & Opt-Outs
RP John Dawson - Opt-Out of $11M salary
It would be a miracle if he opted out of a raise from his 2061 salary. Fingers crossed but the odds are better he'll be released.

Team Options
SP Sakutaro Kawano - $14.6M
One of the best pitchers in the Frick League this season, Kawano has a team option with a $4.5M buyout. Despite the value he's provided us, we'll have to buy him out to get under the reduced salary cap heading into 2062. Luckily, Ielemia Faletose will return after missing a year with a UCL injury to take his place in the rotation.

Pending Free Agents
RP Abban Layar
We're exploring an extension for Layar after his breakout 2061 campaign at 33 years old. Right now the asking price is that of an upper tier setup man which is fair for a guy who's posted a ~3.5 FIP the last two years but might be a luxury the Bears can't afford.

1B Jules Le Gal
Honestly I came up with this series of TN posts because I wanted to find a way to talk about how good Jules Le Gal has been in 2061, slashing .285/.402/.533. The former Charm City slugger is thriving in his role on the short side of the platoon feasting on left-handed pitching (1.022 OPS), although his .845 OPS against RHP is solid too. He's looking to get paid like an every day cleanup hitter this offseason so his run in San Fernando will come to an end.

3B Rhys Brickell
Brickell got some reps while Felix Ramos was on the shelf but he wasn't very effective. Adios to the 35 year-old veteran.

LF Ángel González
We gave Gonzalez a $70K signing bonus so he could retire as a San Fernando Bear. We hope he retires so we can add him to our coaching staff in 2062.

SP Jose Hernandez
Lefty Jose Hernandez has some interesting ratings but didn't make enough of an impact in AAA as a 27 year old starting pitcher to avoid hitting free agency. He's seeking a major league contract.

1B Alfredo Pereira
We gave Pereira an extended look in San Fernando last season but he spent most of 2061 in AAA without making much of an impact. He'll become a minor league free agent seeking a major league contract.

If Dawson opts out, his significant other might well divorce him.

I've tried to make him as miserable as possible. I know if I release him he'll have a 3 WAR season in Vancouver.

I have never had any luck making anyone miserable enough to not exercise an option - just miserable enough to suck :(

It'll be a sad day if Kawano hits the FA market. Good for him I guess.
