2055.04: San Fernando Top 25 Prospects (10-6)

11/14/2054

The San Fernando farm system is at a bit of a cross roads after the promotion of several relevant prospects during the 2054 season. The system as a whole is lacking in top tier talent but does boast 21 of the top 500 prospects according to Prospect Pipeline.

Below is how I rank the 10th to 6th best prospects.

10) 3B José Pérez
Age: 18
OVR 20 POT 45
SA .224/.308/.381

José Pérez produced well enough in rookie ball in 2053 to maintain his prospect standing, but after a poor showing in SA in 2054 his star has faded a bit. Pérez was the 1st round pick of the Bears in 2053 thanks to his power potential. There's always been concerns with whether he can stick at 3B, and if he doesn't his contact skills are making it look unlikely he'll hit enough to play 1B.

9) SP Ken Bautista
Age: 20
OVR 30 POT 45
A 3.2 IP, 1 BB, 4 K, 2.45 ERA

Image

Don't let the A ball numbers above mislead you, Ken Bautista threw 92.2 innings in SA and had a 1.26 ERA. Bautista was a steal for the Bears, signing as a free agent ($1.875M signing bonus) after being drafted by Des Moines with their 1st round pick in the 2054 draft but subsequently being released. There are questions about his intangibles but his scouting report is solid. Bautista will look to solidify his prospect standing in full season ball in 2055.

8) SP Alvin Anstey
Age: 24
OVR 40 POT 45
AAA 137.2 IP, 33 BB, 130 K, 3.27 ERA

Alvin Anstey was an international free agent signing (no bonus) with San Fernando way back in 2047. Due to concerns with his makeup and movement rating, he's been moved up the ladder slowly. But he possesses four 8-overall pitches and has been dominant across three levels the past two seasons. Look for him to make his San Fernando debut at some point in 2055.

7) CF Miguel Montero
Age: 22
OVR 45 POT 45
AAA .325/.375/.469

Image

Usually prospect rankings are based on potential ratings, but sometimes minor league production becomes the motivating factor. That's the case with Miguel Montero, the Bears' 2nd round pick in the 2052 draft. Miguel can run, defend all the outfield positions well enough--he's a slight stretch in CF--and has never hit below .300 in any of his minor league stops. He should be a perfect compliment to some of the platoon-y left-handed hitters on this list.

6) 1B Javier Manuel
Age: 21
OVR 35 POT 55
AA .200/.298/.440

Image

Javier Manuel was released by the Long Beach organization in 2051 (yet another former Surfer--thanks, Lane!) and spent several years toiling away at the lowest levels of the Bears' farm system after signing as a minor league free agent. His contact and avoid K ratings bumped enough heading into 2054 to support his 9 power and get him assigned to a full-season roster. Posessing huge upside thanks to his power/eye combination, Manuel needs to exhibit a decent batting average next season in AA.
