2054.4: An Unbearable Start

Post by BaseClogger » Thu Mar 02, 2023 12:57 pm

April 15, 2054

The San Fernando Bears opened the 2054 season with an eight-game losing streak. After winning two in a row against the defending champion Sacramento Mad Popes, they once again find themselves on a losing slide--three games so far.

Across the board the stats the Bears' players have accumulated are abysmal. Once the best hope for the future of the Bears' rotation--and still only 26 years old--Zach Davis sports a 10.34 ERA through three starts. Newcomer Virginia Rain is being asked to man the hot corner against RHP and is also struggling to the tune of a .129/.200/.226 batting line. Even more concerning, perhaps, is his -1.2 ZR after just six games started at 3B.

If there is a silver lining for San Fernando it lies in some of the underlying statistical indicators. Offensive BABIP is .271, fifth lowest in the Frick. The team has swatted 15 home runs in 13 games and have an above average walk rate. On the pitching side, the Bears have a .363 BABIP against, easily the highest mark in the entire Brewster. While their pitchers don't strike many opposing batters out, they have the lowest BB% in the BBA. Those ingredients combine to a 4.02 xFIP, tied with Rocky Mountain for the fifth best in the BBA. Their 54.1% GB% also ranks fifth, but a 62% LOB% and 15.4% HR/FB rate have combined with the BABIP to give San Fernando a 6.48 team ERA. Only Calgary has a higher team ERA so far.

Stat crunching can be fun for us losing teams! Good stuff. And seriously... "Virginia"?! Dude is from Kentucky.

There are even disturbing reports he wears high heels when he exercises.

On the bright side, just three more wins in a row and you are back to the OOTP preseason prediction rate of 74 wins.

I think you are accounting for my 5-1 record in the most recent sim which helped!
