2054.1: Getting Our Bearings in AAA

Post by BaseClogger » Sat Feb 11, 2023 1:21 pm

My AAA team, the Brooks Fighting Pheasants, had a regular season record of 91-53 and took home the Ropert Horn Memorial championship in 2053. They accomplished that feat via a lineup mostly filled with AAAA players, but the pitching staff was young and filled with some of my best prospects. Since this is a 2054 TN post, I'll focus below on the players I consider prospects and have a chance of contributing to the Bears in 2054.

On the offensive side, two outfielders represent the youth contingent on the roster, Jim Young and Ricardo Espinosa. Young will, ironically, still only be in his age 22 season this year even though it will be his third time appearing in AAA. He's moved steadily up the minors with solid production, swatting 26 homers last year. He is a classic Kurt platoon player, with big power and otherwise middling ratings. He probably needs a small bump somewhere to stick in the BBA. Espinosa was just drafted in 4th round in 2052 but is 50 OVR with big power from the left side himself. Espinosa is such a weak defender he's probably DH only, but his bat is BBA ready now, having hit .282/.392/.509 for Brooks. Expect to see him in the majors at some point in 2054 for sure.

The Fighting Pheasants rotation was filled with guys I consider prospects, even if a couple, Fernando Ferretti and Antonio Cruz, technically lost eligibility the season they spent in the majors as Rule 5 guys. With ERAs of 3.91 and 3.41 respectively, Ferretti and Cruz are similar pitchers with deep repertoires focused on their offspeed stuff and well rounded ratings. I expect them to be my first call-ups for spot starting duty, but at a minimum I know they're effective reliever conversion candidates down the line.

Saving the best for last, the best prospects on the team were another pair of starting pitchers, Alexander Swanson and Perry Wallace. At 22 and 21 years old, they were San Fernando's first round picks in 2052 and 2049. Swanson was the pitcher of the year in AAA, throwing 203 innings of 3.33 ERA ball (oops, I would have preferred to reign in that innings total). He's a unique prospect in that he has six offerings at least 7 OVR. He looks like a sure bet to be an innings eating #2/#3 starter at a minimum, and a small bump in Stuff could make him an ace. Perry Wallace, on the other hand, is kind of an overachiver for a 1st rounder. His potential ratings only go 8/7/6, but he threw 188 innings of 2.87 ERA ball across AA and AAA. His fastball/slider combo should make him a wipeout lefty specialist as a floor, but he's still so young I'm hoping for a bump in ratings to match his production.

Is dominance of a lower level league an ongoing thing for GM's in the Monty? I guess we'll find out!!
