2053.3: Sad News Bears – San Fernando Says Goodbye to Rivera

Post by BaseClogger » Fri Jan 06, 2023 2:51 pm

Before we get into it, a short foreword: I’ve decided I’m not going to write TN posts like they’re fake news stories anymore. It’s corny as hell, and it just feels more natural to write these in the blogging style Ron used. So that’s that.

I traded Roberto Rivera. He’s been reunited with his former GM in Des Moines. He’s a free agent at the end of the season, and because I gave him a 1-year, $15M deal to keep him around another year his extension demands are fairly large. I’ve no doubt Randy will find a creative way to extend him if he wants, but Rivera will head into his 30s soon and is struggling this season.

Rivera was not just my best player but also crucially bats right handed, which has helped balance out my otherwise lefty heavy lineup. He’s an above average defender at third and hit 39 home runs last season. But I also think 2052 will end up being his career year. He was worth 4.3 WAR in 584 PAs. If you use his career numbers, he has averaged about 2.5 WAR in that amount of PAs. This season he’s slashing .260/.316/.406 and his defense has taken a step back.

But that’s enough shitting on Roberto Rivera. I’m finding this league challenging! I have no idea how the talent shift will impact the league soon. I think it means some of the prospects with only 45 or 50 POT are actually going to be players in the near future. I’m not bringing in enough revenue to keep my payrolls close to the salary cap. That’s pressuring me to win more games now. But if I’m going to succeed with a lower budget, I need to start developing talent from my farm system. I have a decent pipeline of high-floor, low-ceiling pitching prospects getting close. But the position side is barren. So I’m focused on adding some young bats.

Enter Tommy Harrison, my return for Rivera. It’s probably light, but it’s been decidedly a buyer’s market since I joined the league thanks to the talent bloat. Rivera has an expensive, expiring contract. He’s not playing well. I wasn’t expecting a ton in return, and Harrison is exactly my kind of guy—big power, platoon splits, good makeup, doesn’t play much defense. I’m hopeful his work ethic continues to push his ceiling upwards. He’s struggled some in A ball this season, so I’m going to let him mash in Short A for a while. He's a young 18 years old, after all.

You're right on the money. Guys with 6 and 7 contacts are going to be players, POT ratings be damned.

I do have to admit having a soft spot for rivera, he was a rare IFA splurge for me and it actually worked out (even though the end wasn't pretty, 21 WAR is pretty good investment for just shy of 6m in bonus money).

If the end is 2053 that’s not on your investment anyways. He was set to become a FA and I gave him a one year extension.

Am I the only one who thinks there might be another mega draft once the 32-ish year olds start to lump togther?

I think commish is pruning the drafts and won’t let that happen.

Just kidding. The great thing about this league is that it can accommodate all writing styles, whatever you're comfortable with. I was a reporter for 35 years so I can do fake news with my eyes closed ;) .

That's one post for every BBA player not named Lucas McNeil that she fooled around with. We need an article that reveals who Sammy's father really is.

Well, he was adopted from Nicaragua. Was really hoping to get more TN with Sammy involving that storyline, but Ron retired and kinda pooped on that parade.

I'm not sure this was quite a mega-draft. A lot of these guys at the top have holes. But relative to other recent draft, it was obviously quite good.

It’s hard to put into words how much better it was than the other six drafts I’ve seen in this league.

Yes. I get it. But the Mega-drafts were ... well ... as I recall ... considerably better.

There are still a bunch of great players from that ERA that haven't lumped out yet or just have this year. So maybe it will be a multi year process. Draft was definitely the best draft since those 2-3 big ones in the late 30's
