It was a sad day for the Bears organization, but one that many prognosticators have been predicting for some time. On September 29th, GM Randy Weigand called longtime stalwart Jon Reed into his office and told him that his services would no longer be required. When Reed asked why he was being let go with 3 games still left in the season, Weigand explained to him that by cutting him before the season ended, it would both give him a jumpstart on getting signed with another organization and also allow the team to spread his remaining salary over 3 years instead of 2 for budgeting purposes. Reed understood and then both men came out and addressed the media who had gathered in the locker room before the game.
Both men were openly wiping away tears as Weigand put his arm around Reed at one point. "This is the part of being in this job that I truly hate sometimes. This man right here has given his heart and soul to this organization for a decade, but at the end of the day we both agreed this was the necessary step for the organization. I hope he catches on somewhere quickly and gets the chance to fight for another Landis, and when he does eventually decide to hang it up for good, he has a job for life in this organization as long as I am around.
