2041.5 Good News Bears: Ballot Explanations JL Nebraska

Post by usnspecialist » Fri Mar 06, 2020 2:21 am

In this space San Fernando GM Randy Weigand will explain the rationale behind his some of his balloting choices for end of season awards, starting with the Steve Nebraska Awards in both leagues.

Johnson League:
1. Dan Cannon
2. Shawn Huber
3. Edwin Gilliam
4. Arthur Dempster
5. Pedro Rocha

Easily one of the most hotly contested ballots of this season, while there was a general dearth of pitching around the league, the top end guys were certainly put up a good showing. Dan Cannon was the winner of the last 2 Nebraska awards and makes a very good case for his 3rd. With easily the top WAR among all pitchers and the top FIP among SPs, Cannon certainly has the top-line numbers to separate himself from the top of the pack.

The next group is a giant pack that frankly could be juggled in any order without much complaint. Huber gets the edge at number 2 for me because while he had less innings than the others being a reliever his win probability average was more than double the other contenders and his FIP and WHIP easily gapped the field as well. Gilliam gets the 3rd spot because of his consistent excellence across the board, including a league leading WHIP among qualified starters. Dempster slides into #4 because of his workhorse mindset and his incredible ability to strike people out while rocha earns the last spot in what amounted to a coin flip over dave martin.
