2039.1 Good News Bears: Team Assembly

Post by usnspecialist » Fri Jun 14, 2019 11:48 pm

Inspired by another GM in the league (and also by GM Randy Weigand's reputation as a living breathing trade machine), here is a look at how the current roster for the San Fernando Bears was assembled.

2026:

Starting off with a franchise rock, star 1B Tai Hoi Wie was discovered as an unheralded 16 year old scouting find (5/5/5 at signing) before blossoming into one of the most feared hitters in the entire Brewster. Currently in the last season of his contract, the Bears are hoping to come to an extension to keep one of the greatest hitters in the history of the franchise around to make a run at some of the records currently held by the HOF duo of Jeremy Hunter and Frank Boerner.

A highly regarded scouting find at the time of his signing, Ramos has regressed from his initial 10/7/5 ratings to his current 8/8/1. He has struggled in multiple appearances at the BBA level and is likely only getting a chance because the Bears bullpen is well, not great.

Signed as a depth draft pick, Rincon has pretty much exceeded expectations by even making it to the big league roster, which he finally did this past year for a whole 6 innings as part of an effort to plug a leaky pen.

Another franchise cornerstone for the Bears, as well as the first piece actually acquired by Weigand during his stint with the team. Rafael was actually the secondary piece of the now infamous Ignacio Rodriguez trade, with the prize acquisition being young CF Abdelwahab Kamade. Rafael quickly developed in the Bears system however, and finally earned his first Nebraska award in 2038 after being one of the top starters in the league for most of his career.

2032:

2 more cogs of the Bears rotation were added at this point, both of which have very different approaches. Jon Reed was picked up from Vegas when they needed OF help and decided to rent Hector Cantu (who was off to a hot start vastly overperforming his previous efforts). Weigand was interested in Reed for his potential to be a strikeout master, and he has certainly delivered on that front while confounding so called "experts" around the league by becoming an above average starter for most of his career. Kinney is a far more typical profile, a lefty who has outperformed his ratings fairly consistently until 2038 despite a few injuries. He fulfills an additional role as team leader in the clubhouse. Cox and Lopez were two lottery ticket prospects acquired for clubhouse cancer SP Chris Brown (who was days away from being cut by the team), and the fact that they have both developed into plausible big league players is a win for the franchise.

The first (and spoiler alert, only) significant trade pick to play a role on the current Bears roster comes to us in the form of 3B Juan Mendoza. Despite efforts by the team to turn him into a 2B during his minor league stint, he rose quickly through the system, making his debut opening day 2035 for the (then) defending champion Bears and has quickly established himself as one of the best 3B in the league. At only 24 years old, Mendoza has plenty of time to pad his career totals. Tovar has been a career backup for the Bears and was a throw-in for the major acquisition of SS Fernando Martinez.

2034:

The obvious star here is 2037 Silk Winner Luis Maldonado, acquired from Madison when they had an OF logjam and chose to prioritize the veteran Steve Dempsey over the Uber talented younger Maldonado. They quickly grew to regret that decision, as this trade (along with the Rafael deal) cemented Weigand's reputation as a trader to be feared with. Kiene and Corona were lower level draft picks who have flashed enough potential to warrent a shot in the pen, although neither has really turned any heads throughout the league with their performances yet. They do represent the most recent draft picks to make an impact on the current roster.

2035:

Arguably the most impactful year in terms of depth of talent acquired, 3 separate trades (including two with the Nashville Goats), yielded potential top of the line SP/2B and a very solid CF. In a rare role reversal for Weigand, he pulled a sign and trade with star SS Reece Wareham due to salary constraints and acquired a flotilla of prospects, including SP Sergei Hopkins. A first round pick the previous year, Hopkins developed quite nicely for the Bears, coming up late in 2037 to assist with a late season run at the Landis before earning the #2 spot to start the 2038 season at 21 years old. The young lefty performed admirably and has great potential as a long term #2 behind Rafael. Angel Garcia was actually acquired by the Bears a second time, having previously been shuffled through town as a much more undeveloped prospect. Acquired when he was much closer to BBA ready, Garcia has proved to be a thumper in the middle of the infield for the Bears, although he has had issues staying on the field. Lee was someone who had fallen a bit from his lofty status as the #3 pick in the draft a few years prior, but the Bears took a chance on young talent versus paying Kamade his expected big raise. Lee had a great 2037 for the team, but other then that has just been a steady if unspectacular presence.

The sole acquisition here in Tomanek was acquired from Nashville as an underperforming starter and promptly converted to a reliever. While he struggled in his first season in the role, Tomanek blossomed in 2038 and takes over as the teams closer heading into the 2039 season.

2037:

In Loftis and Garza the Bears acquired a few of the spare part pieces that every successful franchise needs to be successful, guys that maybe can not be counted on to start every day, but great in case of injuries and they have fulfilled those roles to a reasonable degree. Guerrero was acquired in a straight cash deal as part of the Brooklyn fire sale, a deal in which the Robins agreed to pay all of his salary in exchange for a significant chunk of bonus money. Guerrero has virtually no chance of that 22m team option being picked up for 2040, but the Bears will run him out there as DH in the meantime and watch the veteran go about his business.

2038:

A season in which the Bears mostly scavenged the waiver wire and midseason FA for spare parts, the big in-season acquisition was SP Knud Zeitler. The extremely promising Zeitler is regarded as a ticking time bomb by many due to his past arm issues, but the Bears were willing to take a chance on him in an effort to solidify their rotation. The most recent acquisition was bringing back old friend Jesus Flores, a former 1st round pick by the organization who was dealt as part of the Ernie Kinney deal to fill the giant hole left in the middle of the infield by the impending departure of the legendary Jared Gillstrom.

Totally fascinating to see the dramatic difference in SFB and YS9 composition. Of course, SFB has that Landis thing going for it.

This is true, although as i mentioned we actually have 5 franchise draft picks on our roster, as Flores was a 1st rounder who we traded away and then got back.

Agreed.

While I think I'm more on the Ron -- not 'wrong'! -- side of roster composition, it really doesn't matter (to an extent) how your assemble your team as long as you're winning, and, hopefully, making a profit. I'll never be accused of being a wheeler and dealer, but I'd much rather trade for talent than pay up for it in free agency.

Actually that's a good point. One commonality in the two approaches is limited reliance on free agency.

I generally avoid a situation where I am bidding against someone (whether that be FA or a hot commodity on the trade block), because the value goes way down when you do that. Even harsnett was a late FA sign who I got for a lot less than his initial ask. The only real person I acquired in a bidding war was Gillstrom via trade, and he was so good I couldn't help but pay the high price montreal demanded.
