This award season turned out to be a very profitable one for the Bears, as multiple individuals took home hardware for their work this season. The big winner was 2B Jared Gillstrom (.335/.396/.537, 34 HR, 94 RBI), who not only took home the Puckett award for his position, but also claimed the Sawyer Silk award for the fourth time (first in the Frick League). With his win Gillstrom becomes the second individual to win the Silk in each league (along with Steve Collins), and joins a select list of people with 4+ wins (Charles Puckett 8, Steve Collins 5, Bombo Vadabonceour/Sawyer Silk/Duane Whitley/Juan Escobar 4). Gillstrom has provided a consistent presence at the top of the San Fernando lineup which was the best in the league last year and has shown no signs of slowing down any time soon.
In addition to Gillstrom, two other Bears picked up Puckett awards for their work at the plate. 1B Tai hoi Wie (.306/.417/.585, 42 HR, 146 RBI) picked up his 2nd award for his incredible season in the middle of the lineup and young RF Luis Maldonado (.283/.350/.545, 44 HR, 119 RBI) earned his first such award for his breakout sophomore season. Maldonado also claimed the only Zimmer award that the Bears brought home this year, making him the only player in the league this season to claim both the Zimmer and Puckett awards for his respective position.
While not winning their respective awards, some other Bears who represented well in the awards voting were Wie finishing 4th in the Silk race, 3B Juan Mendoza (.317/.399/.479, 19 HR, 102 RBI) and C Ares Papadias (.260/.326/.535, 33 HR, 96 RBI) finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Gillstrom race and SP Ernie Kinney (17 - 5, 3.32 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 141 K) finishing 7th in the Nebraska contest.
