Good News Bears 2035.5- Award Contenders

Post by usnspecialist » Sat Aug 25, 2018 9:55 am

While the Bears were unable to replicate the success they had in their last season in Havana (failing both to win the division as well as the Landis), there were still some stellar individual performances worthy of award consideration.

SILK:

Tai hoi Wie (.306/.417/.585, 42 HR, 146 RBI): The young first basemen continued an impressive start to his career and proved that it doesnt matter what league he is in, he can flat out do some serious damage at the plate. Scattered all over the leaderboards in both traditional and advanced statistics, Wie is in a very good position to improve upon his career best Silk finish of 3rd in 2034.

Total Bases- 346 (7)
HR- 42 (7)
RBI- 146 (4)
Runs- 118 (7)
BB- 109 (7)
Extra Base Hits- 78 (6)
OBP- .417 (2)
SLG- .585 (3)
OPS- 1.002 (1)
Runs Created- 149.80 (1)
Runs Created/27- 9.43 (1)
WOBA- .411 (1)
WAR- 6.6 (3)
Win Probability Added- 5.39 (5)

Jared Gillstrom (.335/.396/.537, 34 HR, 94 RBI): With his Hall of Fame credentials already locked in stone by his 30th birthday, Gillstrom continues to produce at a level matched by very few players. Having fully adjusted from his middle of the order days in Montreal to being at the top of the lineup in San Fernando, Gillstrom put together his usual stellar all around season, made all the more impressive by having to learn a new position at 2B. He has a very realistic chance at adding his 4th Silk award, a total only matched by some of the most elite players in Brewster history (Bombo Vadabonceour, Steve Collins, Sawyer Silk, Charles Puckett, Duane Whitley, Juan Escobar).

Hits- 221 (3)
Total Bases- 354 (6)
Runs- 127 (2)
AVG- .335 (3)
OBP- .396 (9)
OPS- .933 (8)
Runs Created- 148.05 (2)
Runs Created/27- 8.58 (2)
WOBA- .389 (6)
WAR- 6.9 (1)
Win Probability Added- 4.53 (7)

GILLSTROM:

Juan Mendoza (.317/.399/.479, 19 HR, 102 RBI): As the 8th pick overall in the 2033 draft, Juan Mendoza (.317/.399/.479, 19 HR, 102 RBI) proceeded to tear up the minor leagues, earning the starting 3B job on opening day at 20 years old and pushing legendary teammate Jared Gillstrom (.335/.396/.537, 34 HR, 94 RBI) over to the middle of the infield. With all of those expectations on him, all the rookie did was put together a season that saw him end the season hitting in the #3 spot for the best offense in the Brewster. One suspects that the all-star nomination this season wont be the last Mendoza achieves and he will be an anchor in San Fernando for many years to come.

(rookie ranking listed 1st, overall league ranking 2nd if applicable)
AVG- .317 (1/7)
RBI- 102 (1)
OBP- .399 (1/7)
SLG- .479 (4)
OPS- .878 (1)
WAR- 4.8 (1)
2B- 39 (5)
Total Bases- 291 (2)
Walks- 75 (2)
Extra Base Hits- 59 (6)
Win Probability Added- 2.57 (3)
WOBA- .374 (1)

Ares Papadias (.260/.326/.535, 33 HR, 96 RBI): Acquired from Rockville late in the 2034 season, Papadias got a cup of coffee and helped lead the (then) Havana Sugar Kings to the 2034 title. His potential forced established starter Jose Gamboa to the bench and eventually out of town to the Nashville Goats and Papadias exceeded expectations with his bat. The San Fernando Bears seem to be set for the near future with the young Greek behind the plate.

HR- 33 (3)
RBI- 96 (4)
SLG- .535 (1)
OPS- .861 (2)
WAR- 3.5 (3)
Runs- 75 (7)
Total Bases- 253 (5)
Extra Base Hits- 62 (5)
Win Probability Added- 2.55 (4)
WOBA- .356 (3)

NEBRASKA:

Ernie Kinney (17 - 5, 3.32 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 141 K): As the only member from the pitching staff who came close to his performance from the title winning 2034 season, the young lefthander proved that his Tommy John surgery from 2033 is clearly in the rearview mirror as he established himself as one of the most promising starters in the Frick League. While others on the staff such as Feliciano Rafael (10 - 10, 4.25 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 172 K) and Jon Reed (12 - 7, 4.36 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 205 K) may garner the publicity and headlines, Kinney is the leader in the clubhouse and for this season at least, the leader on the mound as well.

Wins- 17 (4)
Win %- .773 (1)
ERA- 3.32 (5)
HR/9- .84 (8)
Quality Starts- 19 (8)
Quality Start %- .704 (4)
Complete Games- 5 (7)
Shutouts- 2 (2)

Wie and Gillstrom mean this team is never out of any game. It's going to be a fun awards year...as they all are, really.

love having those guys at the top, and Luis Maldonado put together a pretty damn good season too, but just not good enough to get mentioned in the article. The 4 of those guys (counting Mendoza) give me a damn good base to work off offensively and they are all competent (at minimum) with the glove as well.
