Havana Herald 2034.11- A Nice Parting Gift

Post by usnspecialist » Sun May 13, 2018 2:20 pm

With the announcement that not only would the Havana Sugar Kings be leaving for the United States after the season, but that the move to Southern California would take them out of the Johnson League completely, it was no secret that the players wanted to make some special memories with their final season. The team certainly accomplished that, with the franchise's first division title since 2016, when not only were they playing in Buffalo, but they were in the Frick League Atlantic.

When asked what it meant to finally slay the giant that is the Las Vegas Hustlers, manager Mike Wilkinson said "obviously this means a lot for the boys and also for myself personally. I remember when I first took this job 3 years ago, there was a lot of criticism because i had been out of the game for over a decade and had no managerial experience. I will always appreciate GM Randy Weigand taking a chance on me and letting me show that I am capable of leading this team to their full potential".

Celebrations in the clubhouse were surprisingly subdued upon news of the division title however, and when team captain Ernie Kinney casually took a sip of his rum runner and said "while division titles are always nice, the goal from the beginning of the season has been winning games and titles in October, that is all that matters to this squad. If we struggle again in the playoffs (the team lost 3-1 to Jacksonville last year), this division title wont mean anything". With a few days off coming up while their opponent is set, the team will be able to get some rest and recharge their batteries before that last push begins.

At 13 straight wins, Vegas is the hottest team in the league right now.

while the first 3 of those were over me, the last 10 were over a struggling San Antonio team and a bottom feeding Hawaii team. I know you can only beat who is on your schedule, and Vegas is not a team to take lightly, but that 13 game winning streak needs to be considered in context...

That's all true...context is important. Havana is 9-9 in their last 18. Removing their 6-1 record against HAW and BRK, you guys are 3-8 against LV, RCK, and JAX in the last couple weeks.

Prior to completely mauling HAW and SA, Vegas went 7-4 against HAV/CCJ/JAX.

So, yeah....Vegas is pretty danged hot right now.

Right. Havana went 27-27 in the last third of the season.

Not trying to poo-poo the team. Havana's got the horses to go far in the playoffs. But though they say you can't win a division in April or May, the Sugar Kings proved that might not be quite true. :)

all games from April thru September count the same no matter the date. That 55-32 pre ASG stretch was enough to counter-balance the 39-36 post ASG struggles. Worth mentioning also that my Pyth record is better than everyone in the league except Jacksonville.

It's just a fantastic season. SO much fluctuation. So much uncertainty. Lots of angles.

The Rockville/Vegas series should be VERY interesting. Rockville has kinda flown under the radar of the Jacksonville/Charm City duo, and obviously Vegas is Vegas. Would be curious to hear Tyler's thoughts at some point about who he would rather have as he sits there waiting for the winner.
