2063.14: Two New Bear Faces

  • It’s close enough to the magical June 1st line in the sand to start shaking up the team in more significant ways so the Bears have a new everyday center fielder. Arguably SFB’s top prospect (the game ranks him second) and assigned a B+ letter grade in last year’s write-up, Jim Sitton will join the team in the middle of its current road series in Yellow Springs. Sitton didn’t exactly set the world on fire in 372 AAA PAs, slashing 301/.370/.461 (13% better than league average), but our scouts assure us the 23 year-old is far enough along in his development to represent an upgrade over the struggling Sonny Bigalow. Although Bigalow is tied for the BBA lead in outfield assists, his 36 wRC+ calculates out to -0.7 WAR before the calendar even flips to June. After a month of struggles as a right field platoon partner, Kit Markoulides gets optioned to AAA to open the roster spot. Bigalow will now fill that role while being a defensive sub in center.
  • The still crappy but at least manageably crappy San Fernando starting rotation has stabilized to a sub-5.00 ERA in four of the five slots since Morris Chapa was demoted to the bullpen. The holdout was Jerry Richards and his 7.42 ERA but we stand for those results no longer and the 25 year-old has been sent to timeout in AAA. Richards was once identified as a pitcher of promise by Ron Collins the first time we podcasted together, but since then he’s lumped from being a 5-6-7 pitcher to a 5-5-6 pitcher and that just doesn’t cut it in our home ballpark. Taking the rotation spot and making his BBA debut will be 32 year-old underdog Hassan bin Zuhair. Zuhair found some success in the GBC in recent seasons and had a 3.33 FIP for AAA Brooks. The scouts think he should at minimum be more effective than Richards at keeping the ball in the park—at least until the “wrecked” veteran pitcher gets injured.

Sitton looks ready to go and Hassan bin Zuhair should be serviceable.
