58.5- Spinning an Oldie

Post by chicoruiz » Sat Feb 10, 2024 8:54 pm

Okay…this needs some explaining…

As you may remember, I drafted a teenage shortstop first overall last season whose defensive ratings are pretty amazing. The only problem is, his name is Johnny Lazer, and every time I see his name as I peruse my organization, for some reason it makes me think of an old song named “Johnny Angel” which then becomes an unshakeable earworm for me.

“Johnny Angel” was a single recorded by the lovely Shelley Fabares in the early 1960s, so if you are much younger than me (and most of you are) you may not be familiar with it. If that’s the case, this post probably isn’t for you. But they say the best way to get rid of a song that’s burrowing its way into your brain is to pass it along, so I thought I’d write some new appropriate lyrics for it and make a team news about it. If you don’t know the song, feel free to YouTube it or ignore the following completely:

Johnny Lazer, how I love him,
He’s got something that I can’t resist,
Turning every tricky grounder into an assist…

Johnny Lazer, how I need him,
There’s just something magic in his glove,
It’s a talent all the Sabermetric guys just love.

I’m in heaven- I get carried away,
If he can hit .220,
For me that would be plenty.
Other shortstops, might as well split the scene,
Though J. Safar al Din,
Might fill in in between,

But Johnny Lazer, I’m impatient,
I can’t wait until he makes the Show,
And together we will see how high the Gamblers can go!
( “In baseball you don’t know nothin’...” Yogi Berra)

That song came out 4 years before I was born. She was on Coach in the 90's.

At first glance, I thought you wrote some poetry... but, I guess, it's only lyrics ... so ... it's ok... i think...
