56.10- Casinotes-Draft Recap, or whatever...

Post by chicoruiz » Mon Sep 11, 2023 9:08 pm

“Recap” is a funny word when you think about it. It sounds like you’ve “capped” something, and now you’re doing it again. It’s kind of like, people call laid-back folks “nonchalant”, but no one calls an intense person “chalant”. Oh well, I seem to have strayed off topic a bit; let’s take a look at the 2056 Gamblers draft haul:

1. P Brian Whitford- For a #3 overall pick, he may lack superstar qualities, but he’s above average in every way. Barring injury, I don’t see any possible way he’s not a future plus in our starting rotation (there, now I’ve totally jinxed him).

2. C Pancho Fernandez-
Really good defensive catcher who may be able to hit enough to earn a starting job. If this were “Good Cop, Bad Cop”, the Bad Cop would say that there are guys fitting that description available in the Rule 5 draft every year without using a premium pick on him. Shut up, Bad Cop…

Supplemental 2. RP Antonio Terrones-
The second round is where the bullpen arms generally start to come off the board, and I’m pretty happy with this one. Good fastball, okay slider, high intelligence.

3. SP Leonardo Cortes- Probably a reach, but I saw the other starters with decent movement ratings flying off the board so I thought I’d better grab him. Movement ratings are important, right? They better be, because that’s about all Leonardo has to sell…

4. CF Lenya Adlerov- If you squint hard enough, you could see Lenya as a legit center fielder. If you don’t squint, he could still be a decent utility guy.

5. CF Pedro Marin- The poor man’s Lenya Adlerov.

Sleeper: 3B Manny Martinez (round 8)- A 40 potential guy in round eight? Yes, please. Manny is probably too slow to play anywhere but a corner, but by the time he reaches his potential the league may well have changed to the point where what he has to offer at 3B is good enough.

I’ll probably post short-season previews in a few days. Anything to keep from having to write about my major league squad…
