I forget who said that, but it definitely applies to the Gamblers situation as 2055 wraps up. There are a good number of players who, for one reason or the other, have almost certainly played their last game in a Gamblers uniform. Let’s look at them in groups:

GUYS I WOULDN’T HAVE MINDED HAVING BACK: P Ken Sproul, 1B Eric Wignes. I sniffed around an extension for Ken, but he was having none of it. Wignes I’m actually kind of meh about; he hits around .300 and plays good defense, but I’d really like to have more pop at first base than he provides. Both these guys will find landing spots in the BBA, I’m sure.

GUYS WHO WON’T GET ARBITRATION OFFERS: DH John Molyneaux, IF Fred Manchild, OF Julio Garcia, IF Dian Saritka, P Tak-keung Liao. I actually might relent and offer Liao something, but the other guys are just pricing themselves out of the market, in my humble opinion, especially in a year where I have to watch every nickel.

GUYS WHO WERE NEVER REALLY IN THE PLAN ANYWAY: OF Keith Schultz was just taken as ballast in a trade to make the money work out. IF Juan Benitez was just signed to get me through the season. Adrian Nilsen’s career is headed in the wrong direction.

MISTAKES I MADE: OF Bill Bowers was never able to duplicate his GBC success. P Paddy Hutchinson can’t pitch; I don’t know why I ever thought he could.

That’s a bunch of spaces to fill, and there may be more. I had best roll up my sleeves this offseason. All I need to fill the roster is time, money, and smarts. And I have time...
