GAMBLERS AAA TEAM BAGS BROOKLYN FOR DELAWARE

The management of Atlantic City’s Brewster baseball Association team announced today that they plan to move their AAA affiliate from Brooklyn, New York to Wilmington, Delaware.

“We just weren’t able to make it in Brooklyn”, said a team spokesman. “With a major league team already there, and all the other attractions in the New York area, it was getting kind of ridiculous. People would call and ask ‘what time does the game start’, and we’d answer, ‘what time can you get here?’”.

Matters came to a head on July 4, when the BBA Robins were at home, plus the annual Nathan’s hot dog eating contest was happening at nearby Coney Island. “The crowd was so small I thought about closing the concessions and just making sandwiches for everybody”, said the spokesman.

A recent poll by this newspaper asking residents to identify “top things to do in Brooklyn” had “seeing a Bombers game” ranked near the bottom, between a petting zoo and a tour of a printing press.

Wilmington is Delaware’s largest city, and is situated just across the bay from New Jersey. “Theoretically, Atlantic City could call a guy up from AAA and he could get there by boat, which is kind of cool”, said the spokesman.

The new franchise will take the nickname “The Fighting Swedes” as a nod to the area’s history (Wilmington was the first Swedish settlement in the New World). The team colors will be robin’s egg blue and yellow, reflecting the colors of the Swedish flag. The team logo will be an aggressive-looking Viking warrior.

“We wanted to honor the heritage of the Wilmington area”, said the team spokesman. “and honestly, Swedes are one of the last ethnic groups you can use in a nickname without somebody getting their undies all in a bunch about it”.
