I’m generally not much of a drinking man, but after the Gamblers were swept out of the playoffs by Phoenix, I sat in my office and poured myself a couple of fingers of the bourbon that our owner had gifted me when we clinched a playoff spot. Maybe more than a couple of fingers. Maybe three fingers and a toe…
Anyway, I was lost in contemplation of a 2053 that was satisfying in some ways and not so much in others, when who should enter but Pete Brace. Pete and I had always gotten along well in El Paso, and I had brought him here on a one-year deal when I needed to replace Cinema Jones, whose long-term contract was something I couldn’t swallow.
“Have a seat, Peter my man… help yourself to a little taste of this fine bourbon. At least I’m told it’s fine; I’m too much of a peasant to know good booze from bad.”
“Don’t mind if I do. Hey, Chico, I just wanted to stop by and thank you for bringing me over this season. I expect I won’t be back here next year, but it was nice to play for a real contender once in my career.”
“Well, I’m sure you’ll land on your feet somewhere, Pete. A guy who can play second, third, and the outfield and slug in the .800s is going to find a home somewhere. But you’re right… it might not be here. You know as well as I do that we’re entering a really strange period. If all these stars who have options opt out, we’ll be in full rebuild mode. If they opt in, I’ll be scrambling to find enough minimum-wage talent to field a team around them.”
“Well, at any rate, we’ll always have 2053 to remember”, said Pete. “Let’s drink to it.”
We clinked glasses. Well, we didn’t really clink; we were drinking out of red plastic Solo cups. But the thought was there.
I bet the Phoenix GM is drinking out of real glass…

Pappy still tastes like pappy even if it's in a red cup.

Not sure. Can you send me a bottle? I’ll record a video of myself doing a blind taste test.

Good series, bro, I have no idea how we even made the playoffs.
