Casinotes 53.3- Who'd I get???

I guess in a way, all those years in El Paso spoiled me. At least draft-wise. I’m used to picking at the front end of the draft; now that I’ve taken over an Actual Good Baseball Team I’ve moved toward the posterior end. So did I get anything that doesn’t smell like it came out of a posterior end? Let’s look…

1. P Dewey McKim- I like unique guys, and that’s Dewey: a left-handed high school junkballer. Throws five pitches, none of them a fastball and none of them anything to write home about. But he’s a hard worker and by all accounts a nice kid, and I like to think that with a little polish he might have #4 or #5 starter potential.

2. OF Leonardo Rosa- He’s listed as an outfielder, but he can also play 1B, and I’m tempted to try him at 3B; he wouldn’t be very good there, but it would help him toward making the majors as a utility guy, which would seem to be his best shot at future relevance.

3. OF Sean Maguire- No real weaknesses, but no real strengths either. Probably will never hack it defensively in CF or offensively at a corner. On the other hand, he’s good enough in most areas that just a little development in any of those areas could make him an actual prospect. Hey, it could happen…

4. 1B Daniel Ruiz- Now we’re getting to the real long shots. A move to the outfield might be in store for Ruiz; otherwise a first baseman whose main talent is drawing a walk does not excite. Did not hit at ALL in college, which is discouraging.

5. 3B Marcos Soto- Could probably cut it defensively at shortstop. That’s about all the nice things I can find to say about him.

SLEEPER: C Raul Navarro- My round 10 pick. Probably nothing to see here, but he’s a catcher, which is always a plus, and he hit well in college. If I have to pick a sleeper, he’s elected…

All in all, after about the first two rounds, well, there are prospects just as good sitting unclaimed in the free agent market. But these guys are MY guys, and I’ve decided I love each and every one of them, despite their myriad flaws…
