Well… it’s been quite a couple of weeks.
I was sitting quietly in El Paso, contemplating another 90-loss season, when I got a phone call from the owner of the Atlantic City Gamblers. Seems like they had a sudden unexpected opening for a general manager, and would I be interested in the job?
Me???
Turns out the Gamblers had an unexpected opening for a general manager (I didn’t ask- it’s Atlantic City- God knows what happened to him). They wanted to find someone with prior experience, and I (unbeknownst to me- I need to read contracts before I sign them) had a clause in my contract that allowed me to opt out any time 30 days before or after the end of the season. No other GM apparently could be hired without the Gamblers having to pay a buyout.
I thought for about two seconds before accepting. I like El Paso, and I think I was building something there, but we’ve only had one winning season, and I’ve noticed our owner looking at me lately like the judge on “Great British Baking Show” looks at a baker who’s serving him something with a “soggy bottom”.
So here I am now, ensconced in Atlantic City, and talk about jumping onto a shooting star- we’re winning. Like, advancing in the playoffs winning. I mean, I haven’t made a single player move, for better or worse, but heck- 100 years from now, all that will remain is my name on the record as Gamblers GM.
There are a few blots on the horizon, though. For one, the Philly press has been merciless to me so far, pointing out repeatedly that I have the job because management was too cheap to pay a buyout for a “real GM”. And the team itself is locked into some expensive contracts for aging vets that will hamstring us for years unless a miracle happens (the miracle would probably take the form of one or both of them opting out- I honestly would rather have that happen than have us win the whole shebang).
And I’m also in the early stages of working out a renaming deal for our stadium. It’s called Trump Field now. I guess some guy named Trump was president a long time ago, but I’m gonna need every bit of cash I can get my hands on, so I need to find some corporate fat cat who wants his name on a stadium. And I’m sure this Trump guy, whoever he was, wasn’t the kind of guy who cared about having his name on a bunch of stuff…

I highly doubt it’s named after the Donald. Its Trump like in card games. But yea the franchise could do with some spicing up.
