Wheeler, Fudge, Ramey Fail to Make Gamblers out of Spring Training

In a move to attempt to both boost performance and cut costs, the Atlantic City Gamblers announced their major league roster while also announcing the release of Fletcher Wheeler, Henry Fudge, and Jason Ramey.

Wheeler, 27, was drafted by the Gamblers with the 4th pick of the 3rd round (110th overall) of the 2041 BBA Amateur Draft. Wheeler struggled during his 2049 season with the Gamblers where he started in a platoon role as the team's designated hitter, finishing the season hitting .221/.264/.294 with 22 runs scored, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run, 21 RBIs, 7 stolen bases in 9 attempts (.777 success rate), and a -1.0 WAR in 216 plate appearances. Wheeler had a solid spring training, hitting .286/.324/.457 with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 home run, and 3 RBIs in 37 plate appearances (17 games); however, the performance was not enough to remain with the organization. Joe "Sloth" Melucci seems set to receive Wheeler's portion of at-bats after struggling in limited 2049 action (.062/.158/.062, 1 RBI, 20 PA).

Fudge, 26, was acquired along with right-handed pitcher Augusto Morán in a trade with the Jacksonville Hurricanes that sent left-handed pitcher José Souza and right-handed pitcher Domenic Blondell to Jacksonville. After struggling in his first two seasons with the Gamblers to the tune of a 5.30 ERA / 1.66 WHIP / 6.00 FIP in 2045 and a 4.97 ERA / 1.97 WHIP / 4.82 FIP in 2046, Fudge had an impressive 2047 season. Fudge finished the 2047 season 9-4 with 1 save in 2 opportunities (.500 save percentage), a 2.37 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, a 3.22 FIP, a .212 opponents' average, a .621 opponents' OPS, 77 strikeouts, and a 1.7 WAR in 87 1/3 innings pitched (73 appearances). Following his breakout campaign, Fudge posted mediocre results in 2048 (4.27 ERA / 1.39 WHIP / 4.22 FIP) and 2049 (4.21 ERA / 1.32 WHIP / 4.38 FIP); although those results on the surface aren't putrid, the team opted to cut Fudge to save roughly $450,000 in cap room by promoting a minor leaguer making the minimum versus keeping Fudge at his $950,000 salary figure for 2050.

Ramey, 28, was drafted with the 5th pick of the 3rd round (98th overall) of the 2040 BBA Amateur Draft. Ramey had mixed results over his tenure with the Gamblers, finishing with two negative-WAR seasons in 2045 and 2047 with an ERA of 7.08 in 2045 and 5.85 in 2047. Ramey had a very good 2048 season, finishing the season 2-0 with a 2.90 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, a 2.68 FIP, a .237 opponents' average, a .637 opponents' OPS, and 60 strikeouts in 59 innings pitched (47 appearances). Ramey's performance declined to a 3-4 record with a 5.30 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP, and a 3.48 FIP in 2049. Though his FIP was very reasonable, the increase in his ERA combined with a $950,000 salary for 2050 resulted in his release as a minor leaguer is expected to be promoted and make the minimum in his place.
