Gamblers, Cinema Jones Reach Extension

The Atlantic City Gamblers and left fielder Cinema Jones have agreed to a six-year, $60 million contract, locking up one of the most popular Gamblers on a team-friendly contract that also carries with it some risk.

Jones, 26, was drafted by the Gamblers with the 5th pick in the 1st round of the 2041 BBA Amateur Draft; and is in the final season of the three-year, $19.1 million contract signed prior to the 2048 season. Jones had a breakout 2048 season, hitting .308/.383/.578 with 116 runs scored, 47 doubles, 5 triples, 35 home runs, 73 RBIs, 28 stolen bases in 45 attempts (.622 success rate), and a 6.0 WAR in 676 plate appearances, while also providing above average defense in left field. Jones looked to build on his 2048 season with a strong 2049 campaign, hitting .322/.374/.538 with 41 runs scored, 23 doubles, 6 triples, 10 home runs, 35 RBIs, 30 stolen bases in 39 attempts (.769 success rate), and a 3.4 WAR in 331 plate appearances; however, his season was cut short when he suffered torn posterior cruciate ligament in his knee that sidelined him for the remainder of the 2049 season. He is currently on pace to make a full recovery and be back in early 2050, but is not expected to be ready for spring training.

The risk of the contract comes through signing him to an extension without knowledge of whether or not Jones will take a hit performance-wise, either offensively, defensively, or even both, as a result of his injury. At the age of 26, most would likely bet on a full recovery, but it is a heavy obligation nonetheless without seeing any on-field action post injury.

As part of his six-year, $60 million extension, Jones is owed $5 million from 2051 to 2053; and then $15 million from 2054 to 2056, with 2055 and 2056 both being player options. He will be paid $7.5 million for the 2050 season as part of his prior contract extension. The back-loaded nature of the contract allows the Gamblers to fit the majority of the current roster under the $110 million salary cap.
