Boardwalk Empire - 2050.3 - Gamblers, Perez Reach Extension

Gamblers, Perez Agree to Terms

The Atlantic City Gamblers reached an agreement on an extension with second baseman Don Pérez, agreeing to a six-year, $42 million contract. The contract is back-loaded, with a structure of $5 million owed in 2051, $5 million owed in 2052, $5 million owed in 2053, $7 million owed in 2054, and player options worth $7 million in 2055 and $13 million in 2056.

Pérez, 29, was drafted with the 13th pick of the 2nd round in the 2039 BBA Amateur Draft by the Gamblers organization. Drafted as a third baseman, he played third base through most of his minor league career up until the 2043 season with Class-AA Trenton, where he began working at second base due to the emergence of Gamblers' third baseman Ernesto González. Pérez struggled early in his minor league career at the Rookie Class (.202/.218/.305, 4 HR, 42 RBI, 422 PA over 3 seasons) and Short Season A (.228/.271/.378, 4 HR, 29 RBI, 258 PA) levels, but began to show an improved hitting form in his 2042 season at the Class-A level, finishing the 2042 season with Class-A Long Island hitting .303/.343/.439 with 79 runs scored, 29 doubles, 8 triples, 9 home runs, 80 RBIs, 12 stolen bases in 16 attempts (.750 success rate), and a 2.3 WAR in 564 plate appearances. He continued to slash .328/.381/.514 over one-plus seasons at the Class-AA level, and underwhelmed a bit in his lone Class-AAA season (.250/.304/.380, 12 HR, 67 RBI, 608 PA), but was promoted to Atlantic City based on his potential upside and the overall skill set he brought. After sub-1.0 WAR seasons in three of his first five seasons with the Gamblers -- the exceptions being his third season with a 1.0 WAR and his fifth season with a 1.1 WAR -- he broke out in 2049, finishing the season hitting .303/.338/.437 with 85 runs scored, 35 doubles, 6 triples, 10 home runs, 58 RBIs, 18 stolen bases in 22 attempts (.818 success rate), and a 2.9 WAR in 611 plate appearances.

While not one of the Gamblers impact bats, his average defense at second base, solid contact bat, and ability to put the ball in play rather than strikeout has been beneficial. Depending on what happens with González's contract situation over the next few seasons, it's possible Pérez could move back to his natural position of third base if González departs.
