Gamblers Designate Two for Assignment

The Atlantic City Gamblers have started their offseason with two transactions, designating for assignment right-handed starting / relief pitcher Gaspare 'Cadillac' Riano and right-handed relief pitcher Gerard Ledermann

Riano, 29, was drafted by the Gamblers with the 12th pick of the 13th round (414th overall) of the 2043 BBA Amateur Draft. Riano had a solid 2049 season both at the Class-AAA level and in his limited September action with the Gamblers. Riano was a starter for Class-AAA Brooklyn, finishing the season 9-12 with a 3.69 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, a 4.02 FIP, a .223 opponents' average, a .672 opponents' OPS, 138 strikeouts, and a 1.2 WAR in 180 2/3 innings pitched (30 starts). After being called up to the Gamblers and making his debut on 09/10/2049, Riano finished the season with the Gamblers 1-0 with 1 save in 1 attempt (1.000 success rate), a 2.35 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, a 6.91 FIP, a .160 opponents' average, a .700 opponents' OPS, 6 strikeouts, and a -0.2 WAR in 7 2/3 innings pitched (5 appearances). His 2049 season with Class-AAA Brooklyn was a big improvement from his 2048 season, where he finished 2-7 with a 5.20 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 71 innings pitched (13 starts); his 2048 performance with the Gamblers, however, was solid, finishing 0-0 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 13 innings pitched (14 appearances). Riano's 2047 season with the Gamblers - a season he was expected to have a key role in the Gamblers' bullpen, was a disaster - finishing the season 2-2 with 1 save in 3 attempts (.333 success rate), a 6.53 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, a 4.52 FIP, a .265 opponents' average, a .812 opponents' OPS, 37 strikeouts, and a 0.1 WAR in 40 innings pitched (29 appearances, 2 starts). His 2047 season is what likely kept the team from wanting to lock Riano into a BBA salary for the 2050 season, despite exceeding expectations at the Class-AAA and BBA levels in 2049.

Ledermann, 36, joined the Gamblers organization on a minor league contract signed on 01/16/2044 following parts of five seasons with the Valencia Stars (2-4, 2 saves, 5.45 ERA, 1.72 WHIP) and one season with the San Fernando Bears (5-0, 4.71 ERA, 1.37 WHIP). Ledermann has been a mainstay with the Gamblers organization for five seasons; he began 2044 season as the closer of the Class-AA Trenton Generals, finishing the season 8-2 with 38 saves in 41 attempts (.927 save percentage), a 1.73 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, a 3.47 FIP, a .187 opponents' average, a .582 opponents' OPS, 67 strikeouts, and a 1.5 WAR in 62 1/3 innings pitched (55 appearances), earning the 2044 WCL(AA) DNL Reliever of the Year Award. Over the next five seasons with Class-AAA Brooklyn Bombers, Ledermann recorded ERAs of 1.61, 3.58, 2.76, 3.00, and 3.60; he finished the 2049 season 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, a 3.88 FIP, a .249 opponents' average, a .787 opponents' OPS, 63 strikeouts, and a -0.1 WAR in 60 innings pitched (27 appearances). He was finally given a chance to return to the BBA with a September call up, his first opportunity at the BBA level since 2043, but struggled mightily in limited action; he finished the 2049 season with the Gamblers 0-0 with a 10.38 ERA, a 3.00 WHIP, a 12.13 FIP, a .440 opponents' average, a 1.293 opponents' OPS, 1 strikeout, and a -0.4 WAR in 4 1/3 innings pitched (4 appearances). Ledermann's poor BBA showing made clearing a BBA salary for 2050 an obvious decision, but the question is whether or not he will return to the organization that has been his home for the past six seasons.
