Atlantic City Gamblers - September Recap

The Atlantic City Gamblers finished the month of September with a 15-12 (.555) record, finishing the season with a 91-71 (.561) record. The Gamblers finished the season in 3rd place of 8 teams in the Johnson League Atlantic Division, 9 games back of the division winning Jacksonville Hurricanes. The Gamblers secured the third of six wildcard spots and enter the playoffs as the Johnson League's #5 seed.

Offensively, the Gamblers had an excellent month, ranking as follows in the Johnson League (out of 16 teams): 4th in runs scored per game (4.96), 3rd in RBIs per game (4.74), tied for 8th in home runs per game (1.19), 2nd in walks per game (3.33), 11th in strikeouts per game (7.96), tied for 9th in stolen bases per game (0.93), 1st in batting average (.287), 1st in on-base percentage (.350), 2nd in slugging percentage (.485), and 2nd in OPS (.836). Center fielder Juan Rivera and catcher Octávio Moreno both had an excellent month of September at the plate. Rivera finished the month of September hitting .404/.500/.742 with 21 runs scored, 10 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs, 24 RBIs, 4 stolen bases in 8 attempts (.500 success rate), and a 1.2 WAR in 109 plate appearances. Moreno finished the month of September hitting .347/.430/.640 with 13 runs scored, 10 doubles, 4 home runs, 13 RBIs, and a 2.1 WAR in 86 plate appearances. While Rivera and Moreno had a dominant month, they were far from the only Gamblers who had a successful month at the plate -- second baseman Don Pérez (.330/.355/.519, 25 R, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 110 PA), first baseman Carlomaria Donadoni (.306/.364/.490, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 110 PA), and shortstop Ewan Allman (.333/.385/.405, 11 R, 10 RBI, 93 PA) all had an excellent month at the plate, right fielder José Romero (.225/.337/.528, 6 HR, 15 RBI) continued to provide the power fans are accustomed to, and reserve infielder / former Rule 5 selection Asher Chuang (.316/.458/.421, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 24 PA) delivered in limited action. Designated hitters José Calderón (.141/.207/.282, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 87 PA) and Fletcher Wheeler (.212/.235/.303, 3 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 34 PA) struggled at the plate for the Gamblers in September.

On the mound, the Gamblers had a mediocre month, ranking as follows in the Johnson League: 8th in ERA (4.24), 6th in home runs surrendered (31), 7th in walks surrendered (78), tied for 11th in strikeouts (201), 8th in opponents' batting average (.259), 8th in opponents' on-base percentage (.320), 10th in opponents' slugging percentage (.442), and 8th in opponents' OPS (.762). Starter Kevin Shepard was the best starter for the Gamblers, finishing the month of September 4-1 with a 2.65 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, a 2.81 FIP, a .238 opponents' average, a .636 opponents' OPS, 26 strikeouts, and a 1.0 WAR in 34 innings pitched (5 starts). SP Curt Fields (2-1, 3.75 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 36 IP / 6 starts) and Carlos Flores (1-2, 3.99 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 29 1/3 IP / 5 starts) also had a good month of September as a member of the Gamblers' rotation. Closer Pat Waites had a dominant month out of the Gamblers bullpen, finishing September 1-0 with 7 saves in 7 opportunities (1.000 save percentage), a 3.57 FIP, a .167 opponents' average, a .591 opponents' OPS, 7 strikeouts, and a 0.1 WAR in 9 innings pitched (9 appearances). Relievers Roger Koch (0-0, 1.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 9 2/3 IP / 11 appearances), September call-up Gaspare Riano (1-0, 1 SV, 2.35 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 7 2/3 IP / 5 appearances), and Akio Ishikawa (1-1, 3.21 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 14 IP / 11 appearances) all pitched well out of the Gamblers bullpen in September. Woody Tyler (2-2, 7.83 ERA, 1.92 WHIP, 33 1/3 IP / 6 starts) struggled out of the Gamblers' rotation, while relievers Chris Hilliard (1-0, 6.00 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 12 IP / 11 appearances) and September call-up Gerard Ledermann (0-0, 10.38 ERA, 3.00 WHIP, 4 1/3 IP / 4 appearances) struggled out of the Gamblers' bullpen.
