Atlantic City Gamblers - August Recap

The Atlantic City Gamblers finished the month of August with an 18-10 (.642) record, bringing the Gamblers' record to 77-59 (.566), 3rd place of 8 teams in the Johnson League Atlantic Division, 6.5 games back of the division leading Jacksonville Hurricanes.

After a lethargic month of offense in July for the Gamblers, the month of August brought an awakening of the team's slumbering bats. For the month of August, the Gamblers ranked as follows in the Johnson League (out of 16 teams): tied for 4th in runs per game (5.14), tied for 4th in RBIs per game (4.89), tied for 3rd in home runs per game (1.54), 14th in walks per game (2.57), 6th in strikeouts per game (6.75), tied for 11th in stolen bases per game (0.96), 5th in batting average (.273), 9th in on-base percentage (.325), 3rd in slugging percentage (.480), and 3rd in OPS (.805). After a poor July, right fielder José Romero thrived, finishing the month of August hitting .363/.433/.714 with 19 runs scored, 11 doubles, 7 home runs, 24 RBIs, 2 stolen bases in 3 attempts (.667 success rate), and a 1.1 WAR in 104 plate appearances. Romero, however, was far from the only Gambler with a dominant offensive performance during the month of August; also having an excellent month was designated hitter José Calderón (.333/.385/.708, 7 HR, 16 RBI, 78 PA), first baseman Carlomaria Donadoni (.301/.336/.670, 11 HR, 36 RBI, 113 PA), center fielder Juan Rivera (.295/.400/.523, 6 HR, 16 RBI, 9 SB, 105 PA), and third baseman Ernesto González (.351/.362/.544, 21 R, 7 RBI, 8 SB, 116 PA). Designated hitter Fletcher Wheeler continued to disappoint during the month of August in his platoon role, finishing the month of August hitting .122/.182/.146 with 5 runs scored, 1 double, 3 RBIs, and a -1.0 WAR in 44 plate appearances. Left fielder Pedro Trejo (.208/.208/.250, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 24 PA) also continued his struggles in platoon duty following the injury to star left fielder Cinema Jones. Shortstop Ewan Allman (.184/.260/.264, 5 2B, 4 RBI, 96 PA) also struggled offensively; however, Allman still finished the month ranked third for the month in WAR (1.0) due to his excellent defensive performance at shortstop.

While the Gamblers didn't have as strong a pitching performance during the month of August as they did offensively, the Gamblers held their own on the mound which helped key their 18-10 month. In the Johnson League, the Gamblers ranked 6th in ERA (3.76), tied for 8th in home runs surrendered (33), 7th in walks surrendered (79), tied for 9th in strikeouts (214), tied for 9th in opponents' batting average (.259), 7th in opponents' on-base percentage (.317), 8th in opponents' slugging percentage (.432), and 7th in opponents' OPS (.749). Starting pitcher Carlos Flores had an excellent month, finishing the month of August 5-0 with a 2.23 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, a 2.52 FIP, a .235 opponents' average, a .685 opponents' OPS, 55 strikeouts, and a 1.2 WAR in 36 1/3 innings pitched (6 starts). Starter Woody Tyler also had an excellent month of August, finishing the month 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, a 3.90 FIP, a .224 opponents' average, a .643 opponents' OPS, 22 strikeouts, and a 0.5 WAR in 32 2/3 innings pitched (5 starts). Starter Kevin Shepard (3-3, 2.68 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 40 1/3 IP / 6 starts) also had a notable August, along with relievers Pat Waites (0-1, 8 SV in 9 opps, 0.84 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, 10 2/3 IP / 12 appearances), Roger Koch (0-0, 2 SV, 1.64 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 11 IP / 13 appearances), Akio Ishikawa (0-0, 3.27 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 11 IP / 9 appearances), and Steven Flannery (1-1, 1 SV, 3.86 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 16 1/3 IP / 14 appearances). Reliever Chris Hilliard (0-0, 8.10 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 10 IP / 9 appearances) had a terrible month following his excellent July, while Jason Ramey (0-1, 6.75 ERA, 1.93 WHIP, 9 1/3 IP / 10 appearances) extended his cold streak another month.
