Boardwalk Empire - 2049.11 - Romero Extension

Gamblers, Romero Agree to Extension

The Atlantic City Gamblers agreed to a six-year, $69.49 million contract extension with right fielder José Romero, keeping him under contract with the Gamblers through the 2055 season.

Romero, 28, was drafted by the Gamblers with the 6th pick in the 1st round (6th overall) of the 2042 BBA Amateur Draft, agreeing to a deal with the Gamblers with a $2 million bonus. Romero was previously drafted with the 2nd pick in the 3rd round (84th overall) of the 2038 BBA Amateur Draft by the Hawaii Tropics, but failed to agree to a deal with the organization. Ascending the charts to the BBA's #7 prospect, Romero took the league by storm in his first two seasons -- slashing .275/.347/.533 with 85 runs scored, 28 doubles, 40 home runs, 106 RBIs, 7 stolen bases in 11 attempts (.636 success rate), and a 3.4 WAR in 646 plate appearances; and slashing .295/.371/.601 with 118 runs scored, 37 doubles, 3 triples, 48 home runs, 131 RBIs, 3 stolen bases in 4 attempts (.750 success rate), and a 5.6 WAR in 692 plate appearances. Although he impressed in his first two seasons, the 2046 season (.236/.298/.452, 19 HR, 55 RBIs, 0.7 WAR, 424 PA) and 2047 season (.239/.293/.409, 22 HR, 70 RBI, -0.4 WAR, 652 PA) was a struggle for Romero; a strained abdominal muscle sustained in May 2046 would plague the remainder of his season, and there were reports of the injury being reaggrevated in 2047, with Romero continuing to play through the pain. Romero did recover last season, finishing the 2048 season hitting .274/.333/.504 with 77 runs scored, 30 doubles, 2 triples, 32 home runs, 107 RBIs, 9 stolen bases in 11 attempts (.818 success rate), and a 3.0 WAR in 621 plate appearances. His 3.0 WAR figure was a significant rebound after two years of declining WAR and was comparable to the WAR recorded in his rookie season (3.0 vs 3.4).

Romero had a decent month of April this season, hitting .253/.314/.473 with 12 runs scored, 5 doubles, 5 home runs, 21 RBIs, 1 stolen base in 2 attempts (.500 success rate), and a 0.1 WAR in 102 plate appearances. It's clear that losing Romero's power output would be a significant setback for the Gamblers, which is a big reason the Gamblers opted to re-sign him even with some risks in his statistical profile.

"It's no secret that Jose is an important cog in the middle of our lineup," said Fernando Blanco, "we're happy to have him here for the foreseeable future."

The prognosis of an extension between Romero and Atlantic City seemed grim in the offseason. The contract structure -- which will pay just $4.49 million next season -- allows the Gamblers enough financial flexibility to keep the majority of the roster in tact for next season.
