Atlantic City Gamblers - May

The Atlantic City Gamblers finished the month of May with a 14-14 (.500) record, bringing the Gamblers record to 29-27 (.518) for the season. The Gamblers are currently 3rd place of 8 teams in the Johnson League Atlantic Division, 9 games back of the division leading Jacksonville Hurricanes.

Offensively, the Gamblers had an average to slightly below average month of May and ranked as follows in the Johnson League (out of 16 teams): 10th in runs scored per game (4.43), 10th in RBIs per game (4.18), 3rd in home runs per game (1.50), 16th in walks per game (2.21), 11th in strikeouts per game (7.93), 11th in batting average (.257), 12th in on-base percentage (.304), 3rd in slugging percentage (.465), and 9th in OPS (.768). Center fielder Juan Rivera had a dominant month of May, finishing the month hitting .353/.407/.833 with 26 runs scored, 8 doubles, 1 triple, 13 home runs, 24 RBIs, 4 stolen bases in 5 attempts (.800 success rate), and a 1.6 WAR in 113 plate appearances. Left fielder Cinema Jones continued to deliver after an excellent April, finishing the month of May hitting .327/.374/.519 with 12 runs scored, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 12 RBIs, 15 stolen bases in 18 attempts (.833 success rate), and a 1.4 WAR in 115 plate appearances. Shortstop Ewan Allman (.280/.359/.463, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 93 PAs) recovered from a terrible April (.205/.283/.217, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 92 PAs), and designated hitter José Calderón (.254/.289/.521, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 76 PAs) provided a decent slash line and power as his continues to platoon as the team's designated hitter versus right-handed pitchers. Third baseman Ernesto González (.234/.246/.405, 2 HR, 13 RBIs, 114 PAs) had an uncharacteristically rough month and designated hitter Fletcher Wheeler (.194/.265/.194, 1 RBI, 34 PAs) struggled mightily after a strong April (.333/.351/.472, 6 RBI, 37 PAs).

In terms of pitching, the Gamblers had a below average month, ranking as follows in the Johnson League: 10th in ERA (4.42), 10th in batting average against (.262), 10th in on-base percentage (.324), 7th in slugging percentage against (.426), 7th in OPS against (.750), 10th in home runs surrendered (33), and 9th in walks surrendered (87). Right-handed starting pitcher Kevin Shephard (3-1, 3.51 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 3.52 FIP, 33.1 IP) delivered positive results out of the rotation, while right-handed relievers Chris Hilliard (0-0, 2.38 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 4.81 FIP in 11 1/3 IP) and Roger Koch (2-1, 2.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 2.68 FIP, 11 IP) delivered sub-3.00 ERA performances out of the bullpen for the month of May. Right-handed starter Curt Fields (0-4, 8.13 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 5.74 FIP, 27.2 IP) had an absolutely atrocious month of May, while Jason Ramey (0-0, 6.14 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 3.75 FIP, 14 2/3 IP) managed the same fate out of the Gamblers' bullpen.
