Atlantic City Gamblers - April Recap

The Atlantic City Gamblers finished the month of April with a 14-13 (.518) record, currently sitting in 4th place of 8 in the Johnson League Atlantic Division.

Offensively, the Gamblers had a mediocre month of April and ranked as follows in the Johnson League (out of 16 teams): 7th in runs scored per game (4.41), 6th in batting average (.263), 5th in on-base percentage (.331), 8th in slugging percentage (.418), 7th in OPS (.749), tied for 8th in home runs per game (1.04), tied for 6th in walks (3.19), and 9th in strikeouts per game (7.52). The Gamblers offense was led by left fielder Cinema Jones, who finished the month of April hitting .330/.388/.575 with 15 runs scored, 5 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs, 16 RBIs, and 8 stolen bases in 10 attempts (.800 success rate) in 117 plate appearances. Designated hitter José Calderón (.310/.372/.563, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 78 PAs) and designated hitter Fletcher Wheeler (.333/.351/.472, 6 RBI, 37 PAs) were also strong performers for the Gamblers offense during the month of April. Right fielder José Romero (.253/.314/.473, 5 HR, 21 RBI, 102 PAs) added power and run production, with second baseman Don Pérez (.289/.340/.456, 4 HR, 18 RBI, 98 PAs) finishing second in RBIs for the month for Atlantic City. Catcher Octávio Moreno (.169/.264/.286, 2 HR, 5 RBIs, 87 PAs) and shortstop Ewan Allman (.205/.283/.217, 4 RBIs, 92 PAs) struggled in the season's opening month.

In terms of pitching, the Gamblers had a mediocre month of April and ranked as follows in the Johnson League (out of 16 teams): 7th in ERA (4.05), 3rd in opponents' average (.239), 4th in opponents' OBP (.316), 5th in opponents' SLG (.404), 6th in opponents' OPS (.720), 11th in home runs surrendered (29), 15th in walks surrendered (97), and 2nd in strikeouts (232). Ace southpaw Carlos Flores picked up where he left off from last season's JL Steve Nebraska Golden Award winning effort, finishing the month of April 5-1 with a 1.88 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, a 1.96 FIP, a .191 opponents' average, a .517 opponents' OPS, and 53 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings pitched (6 starts). Right-handed starting pitcher Curt Fields also had a solid April as a member of the rotation, finishing the month 4-2 with a 3.53 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, a 4.95 FIP, a .227 opponents' average, a .686 opponents' OPS, and 22 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings pitched (6 starts). Out of the bullpen, the Gamblers had several players who performed well and finished the month of April with a sub-4.00 ERA -- right-hander Pat Waites (0-1, 2 saves, 2.08 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 3.48 FIP in 8 2/3 IP), right-hander Jason Ramey (0-0, 3.12 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 1.69 FIP in 17 1/3 IP), right-hander Henry Fudge (0-1, 3.29 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 3.35 FIP in 13 2/3 IP), right-hander Akio Ishikawa (0-0, 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 5.94 FIP in 16 IP), and right-hander Roger Koch (0-0, 1 save, 3.72 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 2.61 FIP in 9 2/3 IP). The biggest disappointments for the month were starting right-handed pitcher Woody Tyler (1-3, 5.55 ERA, 1.89 WHIP, 5.84 FIP in 24 1/3 IP) and starting left-handed pitcher Enrique López (1-4, 6.84 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 5.64 FIP in 26 1/3 IP)
