Manager Mike Stone Retires, Team Trainer Departs

Atlantic City Gamblers manager Mike Stone has officially announced his retirement after one year on the job. Stone, 62, finished 71-91 (.438) for a 7th place finish in the Johnson League Atlantic Division in his lone season with the Gamblers and leaves the organization in search of their third manager in three seasons.

Stone took over managerial duties of the Gamblers following the retirement of Bruce Frank after the 2046 season. Frank managed the Gamblers for five seasons from 2042 through 2046 to a cumulative 393-417 (.485) record with one playoff appearance (2043) before his retirement following the 2046 season. After a five-year stint for Frank - which included four years without making the playoffs - it's hard to believe one 71-91 campaign would be enough to sour the organization on Stone, which makes his retirement a surprise. "There were no indications he was looking to step away," said an unnamed source within the organization, "he had been waiting for a long time to get a shot in the BBA, it's a shame he chose to step away." The source also noted that his stepping away is not health related. Speculation is that five consecutive losing seasons, including his one year in Atlantic City and his four previous seasons with the Rockville Pikeman's Class-AAA affiliate, has eroded his passion for the job. In addition, having a chance to spend considerable time with his young grandchildren is another likely consideration, especially after accomplishing his goal of managing at the BBA season, regardless of how short is time in the BBA was.

The Gamblers viewed the twelve-year managerial veteran in the minor leagues as a solid bridge to bench coach Ernest Zamora, but now Zamora may be tasked with the managerial job one year after his promotion to Gamblers' bench coach. This, however, is not a certain outcome ---- it's expected the Gamblers will conduct a full-scale search for their next manager, with Zamora as a top candidate.

The Gamblers also confirmed that team trainer Nail Abdul-Nasir, who has been with the organization since 2045, has departed to pursue other opportunities.
