2047 Atlantic City Gamblers - Pitching Disappointments

Right-handed starting pitcher Oliver Mendoza

Mendoza, 24, was given the chance to get a jump on a possible rotation spot for the Gamblers in 2048, but a terrible 2047 season did not position him well for such a scenario. Drafted with the 6th pick of the 16th round (525th overall) in the 2042 BBA Amateur Draft, Mendoza had successful seasons at the Class-Short Season A (5-3, 3.81 ERA, 1.26 WHIP in 2045), Class-AA (4-4, 3.33 ERA, 1.15 WHIP in 2046), and Class-AAA (4-6, 3.86 ERA, 1.10 WHIP in 2047) levels. Mendoza finished the 2047 season with the Gamblers 3-6 with a 6.75 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP, a 6.68 FIP, a .311 opponents' average, a .950 opponents' OPS, 36 strikeouts, and a -1.0 WAR in 66 2/3 innings pitched (13 starts). The Gamblers will have to decide if his potential upside is worth being kept on the 40-man roster and being paid a salary -- it's certainly not out of the question that Mendoza gets designated for assignment after his disappointing performance.

Right-handed starting pitcher / relief pitcher Gaspare 'Cadillac' Riano

Riano, 27, spent the 2047 season split between the Gamblers primarily as a reliever and with Class-AAA Brooklyn as a starter. Riano struggled mightily with Atlantic City in both a bullpen role and a starting role; he finished the 2047 season 2-2 with 1 save in 3 attempts (.333 save percentage), a 1.50 WHIP, a 4.46 FIP, a .265 opponents' average, a .812 opponents' OPS, 37 strikeouts, and a 0.1 WAR in 40 innings pitched (29 appearances, 2 starts). He was 2-0 with a 4.91 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 3.66 FIP out of the bullpen; and 0-2 with a 14.14 ERA, 2.43 WHIP, and 8.23 FIP as a starter. For Class-AAA Brooklyn, Riano finished the 2047 season 6-4 with a 4.00 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, a 5.17 FIP, a .248 opponents' average, a .782 opponents' OPS, 59 strikeouts, and a -0.5 WAR in 72 innings pitched (12 starts). If Riano is not designated for assignment, he will likely have to compete for a spot on the Gamblers in spring training, and his options will likely be limited to the bullpen.

Right-handed relief pitcher Nick Mobley

Mobley, 31, was brought in due to his overall popularity, but his 2047 performance basically assures he will not return in 2048. Mobley finished the 2047 season 0-2 with a 6.09 ERA, a 1.61 WHIP, a 4.95 FIP, a .308 opponents' average, a .872 opponents' OPS, 35 strikeouts, and a -0.3 WAR in 57 2/3 innings pitched (44 appearances, 1 start). In his past three BBA seasons, his 6.09 ERA in 2047 was actually his best, and it is his third consecutive negative-WAR season. His best career BBA season was in 2045 with the Jacksonville Hurricanes (7-15, 4.77 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 4.80 FIP) which resulted in a 1.1 WAR. It's quite possible that this season is the end of his BBA career for the foreseeable future, and possibly for good.

Right-handed starting pitcher Jason Ramey

Ramey, 25, took a step back after a decent 2046 season, finishing the 2047 season 5-8 with 1 save in 1 attempt (1.000 success rate), a 5.85 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP, a 4.88 FIP, a .287 opponents' average, a .839 opponents' OPS, 71 strikeouts, and a -0.2 WAR in 107 2/3 innings pitched (62 appearances, 10 starts). Ramey struggled as both a starter and reliever; he recorded a 2-6 record, 6.75 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and 5.23 FIP as a starter, and a 3-2 record with a 5.05 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP, and a 4.57 FIP as a reliever. It's likely Ramey will be retained to work full-time out of the bullpen next season, but there is disappointment within the organization that he would post a negative WAR after his 2046 season, where he finished 5-7 with a 4.51 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP, a 5.06 FIP, a .283 opponents' average, a .824 opponents' OPS, 43 strikeouts, and a 0.3 WAR in 109 2/3 innings pitched (31 appearances, 15 starts).
