Gamblers Decline Options of Relievers Balun, McConnell
The Atlantic City Gamblers have made their first roster moves of the offseason, officially declining the options of right-handed relief pitcher Augate Balun and left-handed relief pitcher Norm McConnell.
Balun, 35, was bought out for $2 million, with the Gamblers foregoing a $5 million salary for 2047 in the final year of the two-year, $12 million contract signed on 11/28/2045. Balun served as the Gamblers' closer during the 2046 season, finishing the season 3-10 with a Johnson League leading 36 saves (44 opportunities), a 3.94 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP, a 3.25 FIP, a .273 opponents' average, a .771 opponents' OPS, 59 strikeouts, and a 1.4 WAR in 59 1/3 innings pitched (67 appearances). Balun delivered respectable performance, especially given the Gamblers overall bullpen and defense, but the team opted to keep their options open and not commit that salary figure to a player that also recorded double-digit losses and eight blown saves. Although a popular figure, the team did have higher expectations relative to the performance delivered.
McConnell, 30, was bought out for $2 million, with the Gamblers foregoing a $7.5 million salary for 2047 in the final year of the two-year, $11.5 million contract signed on 12/16/2045. McConnell struggled during the 2046 season for the Gamblers, finishing the season 3-3 with a 5.87 ERA, a 1.59 WHIP, a 3.53 FIP, a .288 opponents' average, an .812 opponents' OPS, 54 strikeouts, and a 1.0 WAR in 69 innings pitched (57 appearances). McConnell's FIP was respectable, but overall, his performance did not dictate committing to his $7.5 million option without evaluating other free agent options at different price points.
The Gamblers reportedly have not ruled out negotiating with the aforementioned players in free agency.
