Gamblers, Hall of Famer Antonio Sanchez Part Ways, Will Not Become Manager

In a stunning development, the Atlantic City Gamblers organization has formally announced that hall of fame designated hitter and incumbent bench coach António Sánchez will not return to the organization. It had been expected for years that Sánchez was the manager of the future, but drama reported last season seemed to indicate the Gamblers were hesitant to hand over the reins to the 48-year old after the near ouster of manager Bruce Frank, who ultimately remained the Gamblers manager for the duration of the 2046 season.

Sánchez spent fifteen seasons with the Gamblers from 2018 through 2032 before departing the organization to sign with the Twin Cities River Monsters for the 2033 season. He would spend the 2034 with the Nashville Goats, then the 2035 season between the Long Beach Surfers and Boise Spuds. Sánchez finished his career hitting .265/.374/.497 with 1,523 runs scored, 455 doubles, 21 triples, 583 home runs, 1,768 RBIs, 7 stolen bases in 21 attempts (.333 success rate), and a 56.3 WAR in 11,522 plate appearances. After retiring in 2035, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2037.

Upon his retirement in 2035, the Gamblers hired Sánchez as the manager of Rookie Class Albany Atoms alongside two other Gamblers players -- Mingo Boone as pitching coach and Rafael Bido as hitting coach. In four seasons of manager of Rookie Class Albany from 2036 through 2039, the Atoms finished 147-109 (.574) with two playoff appearances in four seasons, and a Manager of the Year Award win in 2038. Sánchez was promoted to manager of Class-AA Trenton and served in that capacity for two seasons from 2040 through 2041, finishing 163-117 (.582) with playoff appearances both seasons. Sánchez was promoted to manager of Class-AAA Brooklyn Bombers and served in that capacity for three seasons from 2042 through 2044, finishing 226-206 (.523) with two playoff appearances. The Brooklyn Gamblers had declined to a 60-84 (.417) record in 2044 prior to his promotion to bench coach of the Gamblers, which he served as for the 2045 (73-89) and 2046 (78-84) seasons.

Sánchez's departure from the Gamblers organization following the 2032 season was cordial between player and organization; however, that does not seem to be the case this time around. Upon the rumor from last season that the Gamblers were planning to replace manager Bruce Frank with an external candidate, Sánchez reportedly stewed behind the scenes and let the front office know in no uncertain terms that he was ready for the Gamblers to be his team. The front office reiterated their desire for him to learn under an additional manager, though the front office would be willing to have him interview for the managerial position. As this option was not suitable for Sánchez, he informed the organization at midnight on the day his contract with the Gamblers expired that he would not be interviewing and would not be returning to the organization.

With the possibility of Sánchez as the manager of the Atlantic City Gamblers now in the rear view mirror, the questions are now who will be the next manager of the Gamblers, and where will Sánchez end up and in what role?
